The digital revolution in the film industry has been the subject of many
a heated debate and polarised a lot of people. Our research is focused on
how the rise of Digital and High Definition Video has affected the Narrative
Film Making industry. The other main focal point is in digital distribution
and alternate modes of exhibition.
Background
¨
All group members are 3rd year RMIT
students, and share a common interest in film and the direction the motion
picture industry is now taking.
¨
The research and analysis undertaken is important to us, as it could be of use
to our future careers.
Aims
¨
This project aimed to survey the contemporary narrative film industry, and where
it is going next with regard to the digital revolution.
¨
We aimed to ultimately complete a research outcome that will aid our future
careers.
Scope
¨
This project firstly explored the technological changes occurring presently in
the film industry with the onset of the digital revolution.
¨
The study investigated the effects of the change to digital on the commerce of
the narrative film industry, including production, post-production and
distribution costs. It also examined the changes in labor and education in film,
as well as the new directions taken by distribution and exhibition; and the
eventual effect on film piracy.
¨
The project then determined the aesthetic differences between film and
high-definition motion pictures, and who will now begin to make films; and
ultimately investigate what type of films will start appearing. The project
discussed who will resist the change to digital, and investigated whether the
change over to high definition motion picture will be absolute in the near
future.
