INTERVIEW
WITH MOTION PICTURE DISTRIBUTORS OF AUSTRALIA (MPDAA)
by Mithila Gupta
What changes in cinema
distribution will occur in Australia due to new digital formats?
The
introduction of digital cinema would mean that there would be no ongoing 35mm
print cost, therefore running cost would be much lower in the long run.
What is
the cost and accessibility of digital distribution? Do you find it cheaper than
analogue film?
There are
currently on 3 cinemas in
Australia with digital
capabilities, therefore there has only been limited digital distribution thus
far. As explained in my previous statement after an initial set-up cost, ongoing
operation costs would be very low compared to the existing film reel format.
How
absolute will the change over to digital be?
There has
been discussion of a complete transference to digital cinema in
Australia within 5 years. This 5
year plan has been floating around for a number of years though. I would imagine
that we would most certainly see a complete digital change over within the next
ten years.
