Day and Date Distribution by Jarrett Tan The movie industry has been in a bit of a funk, with overall box office numbers declining the last couple of years. Some blame it on the lack of quality movies, some on the shrinking gap between a movie's premiere in theaters and its debut in video stores (from six months a few years ago to about four months or less today), while others attribute this decline to the rise of piracy. Last year, Mark Cuban and Todd Wagner’s media company, 2929 Entertainment, released Steve Soderbergh's low-budget, minimalist, no-star movie "Bubble" opened nearly simultaneously in theaters, video stores and homes. This became known as Day and Date Distribution. Many in the movie industry have been against that form of distribution, fearing that it would make movie attendances decline even further. |
