'Splosion Man, the title alone already tells what it's all about, exploding! It's the new way of jumping, using levers and killing enemies. Where this crazy idea came from? The insane mind of developers Twisted Pixel who previously were responsible for the crazy Xbox Live Arcade title The Maw.
A secret experiment went wrong and gave you the possibility to use explosive powers. Only disadvantage? You're a bit absent in your head - coo-coo - but that doesn't stop you from escaping from the laboratory. The scientists present, however, want to prevent this and don't mind using all kinds of traps and robots to stop you. Time to give them a taste of their own experiment. The concept of the game is very simple, your character can explode for three times in a row after which you need to reload. Here's the catch: you can only reload on the ground or against wals. This results in perfectly analyzing the platform environment before you start sploding as you want to make sure your last bounce off the wall is in the right direction. As the game progresses obstacles get more difficult and come in the typical platform style; acid baths, water, falling blocks with pins and moving platforms where timing is central. Everything we've seen before is present but yet different.
The level design offers a real challenge, it can be compared with the obstacles from other platformers but due to the fast pace and limited explosions you need to think and act fast. The quicker you reach the end of a level the more points, but there's also extras to be earnt by your appetite for destruction, finding a cake and slaughtering scientists which this time doesn't result in a bloodfest but a fountain of sausages, steak and roast. Once you reach the end of a level you can compare your score with your friends and check your performance on the worldwide ranking.
As you go through the fifty levels the challenges grow more difficult and never start to bore thanks to a fluent stream of new ideas that make for the necessary variation. If you do get stuck you can select the "Way of the Coward" and skip a level but of course this will result in you getting a bad score and also makes that you'll need to wear a tutu in the next level.
Next to single player there's also a co-op multiplayer that contains a completely new series of level where teamwork is central. With up to four players you can enjoy this mode both on- and offline. By exploding together you can launch each other a lot further than normal, and although the necessary coordination is required you can perfectly time a countdown with the left trigger of a controller.
'Splosion Man's most important element remains the comedy. It's present in all possible forms and the game will no doubt put a smile on your face many times. You'll for instance use a fat scientist as human shield to get past a laser cannon while in the back you hear a song called "Everybody loves Donuts". Hilarious!
Also graphically the game is excellent with a cartoonesk appearance that perfectly fits. The only downpoint is the camera which sometimes goes from 2D to a different point of view which limits your view on coming obstacles, but luckily this never becomes too much of a problem.
'Splosion Man offers everything an XBLA title should have. A nice level of pick&play;, huge challenge and the kick to be better and faster than our friends. The game also has tons of rewards going from gamerpics and themes to avatar awards. Definitely one to check out!
