1.  Wenling Jiangxia experimental tidal generation plant

The Jiangxia tidal power generation plant is one of the largest tidal generation plants in China and an experiment facility of tidal generation. The plant locates at Jiangxia port at 16 kms southwest from Zhejiang¡¯s Wenling County. The power plant started its construction in 1972 approved by the State Planning Commission as a Tidal Power Generation Research Project on tidal features, tidal generation units, and ocean construction technical problems, and integrated resource utilization. The current plant installs two models of double direction bulb-type hydraulic generating units. Unit 1 and 2 of the same model installed accelerators between water turbine and generators to increase the propeller¡¯s low rotate speed of 118 rotations per minute to the generator synchronized 500 rotations/minute. The specified power of the unit 1 is 500 KW, and the unit 2 600KW. Unit 3, 4, and 5 are of the same model. Their water turbines and generators are connected directly with rotation speed of 125 R/M and specified power 700 KW. With the total installed capacity of 3200 KW and annual production of 6.50 million kWh, the tidal plant is ranked third only after French Lance and Canadian Annaplis.
The sixth unit improvement project has been supported by the National ¡°863¡± program, which will install a 700 KW new model tidal generation unit. Going smoothly, the new project will have a total investment of 8.1311 million Yuan (not including generator system design and making costs).

2.  Solar power and building integrated 200 KW PV station demonstration project at Wenling

The renewable energy demonstration projects at Wenling play a leading role in China. The developed projects include the largest tidal power generation plant in Asia, wind power, and nuclear sea water desalting project. Once the solar power station is completed, Wenling will become the most comprehensive renewable energy utilization base. The local government fully recognizes the importance of solar technology application and brings it into the new rural development planning activities. So far, Wenling has established a solar battery production line with annual output of 25 MW by local made solar battery products. Cooperation has been contracted in R&D with the National Renewable Energy Engineering and Technique Center.
The Wenling 200KW solar building PV station demonstration project uses high efficient solar battery systems produced by Zhejiang Baoliter RE Stock Company. The PV station, integrated with the factory building, fully considers convenience and decoration apart from practical application. The battery system contains aluminum alloy tiles, rain flumes, roof base pressurized seal components for covering holes, and exit holes at base pressurized seal components or roof top covering holes. Cable of the battery system is placed through the battery components and roof tope bases and extended to the back space of the roof top bases, which improves water proof and fire proof characteristics.

The demonstration project is expected to invest 19.98 million Yuan. Currently the project is under the feasibility study.

3.  Status of Zhejiang biogas development and three hoggery biogas power station projects at Longyou County

Livestock and avian farming have been one of the principal industries in Zhejiang province. While creating tremendous economic returns, it has resulted in significant environmental pollutions. Especially in recent years, since harmonious development programs have been implemented in the rural areas in Zhejiang, large scale hoggery biogas projects develops very fast. These biogas projects contribute positively to resource utilization of the hoggery waste and to the sustained rural economic development.
By 2006, Zhejiang has built over 1149 large and medium-sized biogas projects with total volume of 299 thousand cubic meters, annual waste processing capacity of 13.27 million tons, and produced biogas of 20.07 cubic meters. It is estimated that by 2010, the similar biogas projects can be totaled about 2000 in the province. Methane produced at most of the biogas projects is used for fuel and lighting in the farms, only small portion is used for electric generation. Since the farm areas are at least 500 meters from villages, pipeline cost could be high; few of the biogas projects provide domestic fuel for local residents. Especially during the high-yield summer seasons, unused methane gas is emitted directly to atmosphere and results in air pollution.
Currently there are 38 biogas electric generator systems in total in Zhejiang province with accumulated capacity of 1113 KW. Since power of any single generator is low, all the generated electricity is mainly supplied to livestock farm itself for feeding stuff processing, waste water station operation, and daily use by employees. Most of the current biogas projects processes urine from hoggery waste. If put all the swine dung into anaerobic ferment tanks, they can produce 160-220 million cubic meters each year. Further suppose that 70% of the biogas output is used for power generation, it can produce 200-280 GWh annually, which is equivalent to 40-50 MW installed capacity.
By using biogas power generation, the most economic way is to firstly meet the farm demand for electricity, and then provide exceed production to the public power grid. The same way can be applicable for heat output, first to meet the anaerobic ferment heating requirement, and then heating for houses and livestock farms. Zhejiang is a large province in economy, but small in energy sources. If biogas projects can be appropriately used for power generation, significant economic, social, and environment benefits can be achieved because biogas can greatly reduce air pollution while generate electricity and produce heat supplies.

Three livestock farm biogas projects at Longyou County:

Xingang Livestock Farm is located at Wangcun village of Tashi town. The farm raises about 12000 pigs with total investment of 1.278 million Yuan. The biogas anaerobic digester of 1000 m3 can treat swine wastewater 135 tons every day (with annual treatment of 49.3 KT). Daily biogas output is 234 m3 (with annual production of biogas about 85.4 Km3). Most of the biogas produced are used for cooking and the unused emit to the atmosphere. The treated swine dung, biogas liquid, and residuals can be used as fertilizer for fruit garden and tea plantation.

Qujiang Livestock Farming Co. Ltd is at Jiangjia village of Zhanjia town. The farm, covering an area of 270 Mu, has a 35 Mu piggery, farming garden to use the wastewater, an oxidation pond of 170 Mu for producing 5500 live pigs with annual sales 18000 out of the kept 23500 pigs. In the company, an biogas anaerobic digester of 3000 m3 can produce 750m3 methane each day, mainly for cooking. the unused emit to the atmosphere. The treated swine dung, biogas liquid, and residuals can be used as fertilizer for fruit garden and vegetable plantation.

 Xijngtai Agriculture and Herd Technology Co. Ltd, residing at Huangcun village, is a joint venture with Taiwan at a registered investment of 1 million US dollars. Main businesses of the company include swine breeding, pig farming and marketing, flower product and sales. The company also runs business of livestock farms, feeding stuff processing, organic fertilizer production, plantation gardens, of which the pig farm raises 1000 breeding sow, 100 boars, with annual sales of 20000. The 52 piggeries cover an area of 20000 m2. The company owns an modernized production facilities for pig breeding, feeding, and sales. The company¡¯s feeding stuff factory can meet its own demand and sell products outside. A 100 Mu plantation and 100 Mu water land, a tea garden, and a seedling forest are located around within an area of 2 km. Water channels and spray system can make use of the biogas waste liquid for fertilizer. With convenient transportation, the company has creasted a favorable natural and ecological environment. The 2100 m3 volume biogas project can produce 525 m3 methane gas mainly for cooking. Extra output is emitted into the air.

According to a general plan, the livestock farm pays more attention to environmental protection through an integrated system of pollutant treatment, energy development, and resource recycling so that positive return can be realized out of the input for water pollution treatment and finally the social, environmental, and economic benefits can be achieved.
The project design uses reliable, economic, and advanced technical processes so as to reduce operational costs. International advanced techniques and equipment are used in treating livestock farm pollutant. Project construction has adopted relevant national and local standards and technical codes that has ensured advanced equipment selection, reliability, energy efficiency, economy and stability in operation.
The demonstration projects inputs were from 1.5 to 2.3 million Yuan. With national incentive policies, the integrated treatment of swine farm pollutant is effectively transformed into reusable resource under the non-pollution and resource conversion objectives. The success of the projects as a role model has demonstrated an attractive social, ecological, and economic benefits.
