Cecarakan is an alternative script for writing Malay or Indonesian invented by Ali Aulia Ghozali from Indonesia. The name Cecarakan is based on the name of the Balinese alphabet, Carakan.
The Cecarakan script is divided into three parts: huruf utama ('main letters' or consonants), huruf sandangan ('attached letters') and tanda baca ('punctuation marks').
There are 39 consonants. Each one has the inherent vowel 'a' (pronounced /a/). This inherent vowel can be modified by the huruf sandangan.
These letters are used to modify the vowel of each consonant.
Punctuation marks and numbers in Cecarakan are the same as in the Latin alphet, with a few extra symbols:
Semua orang dilahirkan merdeka dan mempunyai martabat
dan hak-hak yang sama. Mereka dikaruniai akal dan hati
nurani dan hendaknya bergaul satu sama lain dalam semangat
persaudaraan.
(Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in Indonesian)
All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They
are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another
in a spirit of brotherhood.
