Welcome to the Drake University School of Education, one of the largest programs of its kind in the Midwest. The SOE has approximately 300 undergraduate students majoring in elementary and secondary education, along with more than 700 graduate students working toward masters, specialists and doctoral degrees in education leadership, teaching and learning, counseling, adult learning and organizational performance, and professional development. The school serves over 10,000 extension education students who receive graduate and professional development credit. Message to returning students - welcome back! As the first significant snowfall reaches the ground, we shovel off to start the second semester of the 2011-12 academic year. Today, 70 more SOE pre-service teachers started their 15 week assignments with mentor teachers in metro area schools. Since fall, 23 more undergraduate students have transferred into the SOE with a desire to be world-class teachers! Our graduate students start their evening courses and many will forget watching the Superbowl to attend weekend classes in Educational Leadership, Counseling or Adult Leadership/Organizational Performance. During winter break, 30 of our students attended a Saturday workshop for aspiring school administrators. In Extension Education, the new courses in Human Relations and Anti-Bullying are reaching capacity as we continue the development of our off-campus ELL program to be offered in cooperation with Heartland Area Education Agency. We have completed successful searches and welcome Dr. Tonia Land as a faculty member in Math/Technology and Dr. Kevin Lam for Urban Education. Additional interviews are scheduled for two more professors to teach sections of Secondary Education and courses in our new Literacy Masters' Degree. While the state and local politicians are looking for ways to reform education, we are looking ways to serve each one of our talented students.
