Max Payne 3 Trailer - Max Does Not Abide

By Dan Stapleton | PC News | Feb 16, 2012 10:20 AM | Comment

This Max Payne 3 trailer really ties the room together. Think of it as The Big Lebowski, except the nihilists really did kidnap Bunny -- and instead of German nihilists they're Brazilian gangsters, and instead of The Dude, it's an older, sometimes-bald, and really pissed off Max Payne blowing fools away to rescue the boss's bimbo trophy wife. It's made entirely from in-game footage, which makes it look pretty impressive, though most of it looks like in-game cinematics. (Side note: the PC version will come out two weeks after the console version, so... boo.) Grab a White Russian and click through to watch. Read More »

Awesome StarCraft 2 Fan Art Detected

By Dan Stapleton | PC News | Feb 16, 2012 2:24 AM | Comment

Reddit upvoted this impressive bit of StarCraft fan art: a Zerg Hydralisk crafted from copper. Something about the hand-made look of it makes it seem all the more authentic, like a petrified exoskeleton dug up and reassembled for display in a museum. I want one -- which means I should probably make sure my tetanus shot is up to date. Click for a bigger, scarier image. Read More »

New Game from Original Counter-Strike Co-Creator to Enter Closed Beta Next Month

By Dan Stapleton | PC News | Feb 15, 2012 11:35 PM | Comment

According to Steam's stats, more people played Counter-Strike (1.6 and Source) today than Skyrim, Team Fortress 2, and Dota 2 combined. So when Min "Gooseman" Le, one of the co-creators of the original Counter-Strike mod that launched the phenomenon, gets ready to kick off his new game, it's kind of a big deal. That game is Tactical Intervention, a free-to-play shooter that looks very much like an expanded Counter-Strike, complete with driveable vehicles, rappelling, attack dogs, and presumably all manner of new tactical toys, and it will enter closed beta in America in March. See the trailer -- and how to sign up for the beta -- after the jump. Read More »

Double Fine Adventure Putting Extra Money Toward Voice Acting, Alternate Language Versions

By Nathan Grayson | PC News | Feb 15, 2012 9:20 PM | Comment

I apologize, everyone. My sudden, uncharacteristic spurt of optimism may have killed Psychonauts 2. In the future, I will endeavor to be the cynical cloud that rains on every parade, picnic, and outdoor smiling convention in my path. So yeah, Double Fine Adventure's getting all sorts of cool new features thanks to the multifarious hydra saint that is the Internet, but I bet it'll... I don't know, implausibly require GFWL or something. Read More »

EA: If Origin's Not up to Par in "18 Months to Two Years," Then You Should Complain

By Nathan Grayson | PC News | Feb 15, 2012 8:00 PM | Comment

Rome wasn't built in a day. And neither was EA's Origin download service, but apparently, it needs even more days. A lot more days. Up to 730, by my elementary school math-based calculations. Which raises the question: Why wasn't it done when it was, you know, done? Take it away, EA COO Peter Moore. Read More »

AMD Shows Its Low End: Radeon HD 7770 and 7750

By Dan Stapleton | PC News | Feb 15, 2012 5:21 PM | Comment

The Radeon HD 7000 family tree continues to sprout new branches -- and this latest set is much easier to reach. We've seen the all-powerful, $550 HD 7970, the really quite powerful $450 HD 7950, and today brings the more modest $160 HD 7770 and $110 HD 7750. What do those budget prices get you? They're actually fairly capable cards if you're scraping together pennies to build a machine for light gaming, but it's unlikely to be a significant upgrade from last year's low-end cards -- or the year before. Notch Blogs About Psychonauts 2, Drops Lots of "Ifs"

By Dan Stapleton | PC News | Feb 15, 2012 4:05 PM | Comment

Ever wonder why most discussions about potentially investing millions of dollars in making a new game don't happen out in the open over Twitter? Here's why: Minecraft-creator-turned-angel-investor Markus "Notch" Persson is starting to freak out a little over the hype surrounding his friendly chatter with Double Fine's Tim Schafer about funding a potential Psychonauts 2, and respectfully asks that everybody chill out a little. Preview: Hi-Rez COO Todd Harris Talks Smite

By Mike Sharkey | PC Previews | Feb 15, 2012 12:30 PM | Comment

Anubis shoots frickin' laser beams from his eyes. Well, technically, they're not laser beams. It's the Egyptian god's Death Gaze, his ultimate ability in Hi-Rez Studios' upcoming third-person MOBA, Smite. And in explaining how it works, COO Todd Harris provides a good example of what makes Smite different from the DotAs and LoLs of the gaming world: you not only have to aim Death Gaze at your enemies because there is no auto-locking, you have to maintain your aim to land hits because opponents actively evade your attacks. Smite is as much about action as strategy, and Hi-Rez thinks it's a blend that will attract a whole new audience to the rapidly growing multiplayer online battle arena genre. Read More »

Assassin's Creed 3 Confirmed, Coming in October (or Perhaps Several Months Later)

By Dan Stapleton | PC News | Feb 15, 2012 10:45 AM | Comment

It's strange to give a release date for a game without first explaining what that game will be about, but Ubisoft's never demonstrated any fear of afraid of being strange. Today it announced that Assassin's Creed 3 will come out on October 30th of this year -- but I'll believe that when I'm stabbing people on Halloween. I expect we'll hear about the PC version being delayed by a couple of months right around August. Read More »

Far Cry 3 Cinematic Trailer Makes You Think Twice About that Tropical Vacation Plan

By Dan Stapleton | PC News | Feb 15, 2012 10:35 AM | Comment

There's not a hint of actual gameplay in this cinematic trailer, but it does pin Far Cry 3's release date at September 7th (subject to Ubisoft's notorious habit of delaying the PC release, of course) and set up the story of a group of three vacationers on an uncharted tropical island getting captured by a real charmer of a sociopathic thug. Watch it after the jump. Read More »

Mechner Making Karateka Remake... For Consoles

By Mike Sharkey | PC News | Feb 15, 2012 6:12 AM | Comment

Jordan Mechner is returning to his indie game roots, and he's bringing Karateka with him. If that doesn't get your old-school-gamer juices flowing, you might need a whack in the face with a Commodore 64. Just one problem, and I hate to be the bearer of bad news: Mechner's Karateka remake is, for now, console-only. Read More »
