SSX online pass walls off virtual currency

EA has confirmed that SSX, the upcoming reboot of its snowboarding series, will use the company's online pass.

Rather than lock second-hand buyers out of the game's multiplayer component entirely, however, it prevents them from accruing the in-game currency used to unlock vanity items and additional events.

"In SSX, players without an online pass are able to compete and play in both of SSX's online modes, Explore and Global Events, with no restrictions," EA said in a statement passed to Game Informer. "In Global Events, the top finishers are awarded in-game credits.

"These in-game credits earned during play will not be awarded to the player if they do not have an online pass; these credits will be stored so that at any time, if a player redeems an online pass code, all the credits that they had previously earned in Global Events will be immediately awarded to them."

The move shows that EA is open to experimenting with the implementation of its single-use codes, and this sounds like a much better solution than simply locking second-hand buyers out of the multiplayer component: by allowing them to experience the multiplayer mode, it shows them what they're missing. SSX will be released for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on March 2.

Why are developers giving us more of this BS every day?

When I have to pay 50 quid for a game, I want to be able to sell it.

Those measures greatly diminish the value of used games.

By the way, if a game is good, people simply won't sell it...

I'd say this this is even more ridiculous than walling off online play, and comes with even less of an argument in it's favour.

Question Edge - you were uneasy about the Catwoman code. The stuff that this walls off can also be used offline, why is this fair game, and Arkham City not? I suspect also that this code will apply to a single account, and not a console, so if I buy SSX, anyone else using my console would have to buy the online pass. Do you think that is reasonable?
