ABOUT

Known as a champion of limited government, the longtime Texas congressman has penned several books about his political philosophy. Paul ran for president as a Republican in 2008 and was known then for his Internet-driven campaign and his use of social media. He also ran for president in 1988 as the nominee of the Libertarian Party.

After serving in the U.S. House in the 1970s and 80s, Paul ran for office again in 1996 and won a tight race. He has held that seat ever since, representing Texas’ 14th Congressional District. He has served on the House Banking Committee and currently sits on the Financial Services Committee and the Foreign Affairs Committee.

His son Rand, a Tea Party favorite, was elected to the U.S. Senate from Kentucky in 2010.

Paul is a physician, specializing in obstetrics and gynecology. He served as a flight surgeon in the Air Force in the 1960s. In 1984, he did not seek re-election to his House seat and returned to his medical practice. He has delivered more than 4,000 babies.

FUNDRAISING

Paul had $3.6 million cash on hand at the end of September, which was well behind Rick Perry and Mitt Romney, but the third highest among all GOP candidates. He has raised a total of $12.6 million, which also is third in the GOP field.
