DELTA Rx Institute

Delta is the greek symbol for change. The DELTA Rx Institute serves to promote a philosophy of life centered on “entrepreneurial leadership” in pharmacy.  An entrepreneurial leader works to advance the profession of pharmacy by proactively identifying and pursuing new opportunities to create value for patients and society. This means recognizing and fulfilling a professional obligation to promote change, to identify and pursue opportunities, and to improve patients’ lives.

There are many “levels” of entrepreneurial leadership that can occur:

  • Improvement in a single patients’ care through proactively developing new approaches to apply the knowledge of pharmacy
  • Identifying completely new products or other opportunities and bringing them to market to advance society.

In general, entrepreneurial leadership is for every practitioner!

DELTA also stands for Drake Entrepreneurial Leadership Tools for Advancement. In addition to defining and further developing the concepts of entrepreneurial leadership, the DELTA Rx Institute facilitates the integration of these concepts into practice and pharmacists’ professional lives by providing and increasing access to tools that have been developed to advance practice.

Pharmacy is a unique body of knowledge that can be used to create value through advancing health, and identifying new services, products, markets and opportunities to enhance people’s lives in both health-related and non-health-related areas. The DELTA Rx Institute serves to provide a leadership role and be a catalyst in identifying and developing these opportunities to create a stronger profession of pharmacy for the benefit of society.

Recognizing the need and opportunity to help people outside of the profession to see and understand the value the pharmacy brings to society; this initiative is dedicated to advancing the profession through entrepreneurial leadership. The DELTA Rx Institute and its associated web site at www.deltarx.com are designed to support all constituencies invested in advancing the profession of pharmacy.  Contact Delta Rx:  deltarx@drake.edu.

Collaborative Education Institute (CEI)

The Collaborative Education Institute (CEI) is a continuing pharmacy education provider developing and delivering professional and educational opportunities for pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and student pharmacists. CEI has been developed as part of a collaborative effort between Drake University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, University of Iowa College of Pharmacy and the Iowa Pharmacy Association, focused on the advancement of pharmacy practice and the enhancement the quality of pharmaceutical care provided to patients.

Drake University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, located in Des Moines, Iowa, contributes a strong national presence in entrepreneurial leadership and disease state management, resources and renowned clinicians and faculty. The University Of Iowa College Of Pharmacy brings strong research and educational capabilities, resources and nationally renowned pharmacy and health science faculty. The Iowa Pharmacy Association is housed with a premiere state, membership-based organization that has successfully spearheaded continuing education endeavors and practice change initiatives, both in-state and nationally.  “This partnership brings together the strengths of three organizations to further advance continuing pharmacy education and continuing professional development by ensuring the highest quality educational programming for pharmacists and other health care providers locally, regionally and nationally,” says Jennifer Moulton, Senior Vice President of Educational Affairs for the Iowa Pharmacy Association.

CEI is committed to the concept of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for pharmacy professionals and educators. CPD is a self-directed, ongoing, systematic and outcomes focused approach to learning and professional development. Pharmacists and health care professionals who adopt this philosophy will:

  • Reflect on their practice, assessing and identifying professional learning needs and opportunities
  • Develop and implement a personal learning plan
  • Evaluate learning outcome

The launch of this web site is the first step in establishing CEI's ability to foster this learning process. Ultimately, this site will contain a variety of tools to assist pharmacists, technicians and educators in optimizing learning outcomes to truly enhance your pharmacy practice.

CEI has also develope a set of modules focused on the professional development of preceptors.  Pharmacists serving as preceptors play an increasingly key role in the Doctor of Pharmacy curriculum.  Under new ACPE accreditation guidelines, new preceptors will be required to complete mandatory training prior to accepting students.  To meet this requirement, Drake University and University of Iowa preceptors will be asked to participate in 4-30 minute modules addressing topics that include providing experiential students with constructive feedback, developing a site, and the role of the preceptor.

For more information, visit the CEI website at www.theCEInstitute.org or call the Iowa Pharmacy Association at 515.270.0713.
