Assembly Building
____________________________________________

Old Assembly Building

This imposing edifice, completed in 1913, was the Town Hall in the Old Hyderabad State. The citizens of Hyderabad raised money to build it to mark the 40th birthday of Nizam Mahboob Ali Khan in 1905. This white gem of Hyderabad's architectural splendour was designed by specially-commissioned architects, who travelled through Rajasthan after the Nizam returned tremendously impressed by the beautiful palaces there. This blend of Rajasthani and Persian architecture was the home of the 295 seat Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly. New buildings have been added to accommodate the Legislative Offices of Ministers and Political Parties.

New Assembly Building

The New Assembly Building of Andhra Pradesh, adjacent to the Old Assembly Building, is located in a palace surrounded by thick vegetation. The architecture adopted for the exterior elevation to the new building is the same as that of the Old Building, leaving no scope for differentiation between the two buildings.

The idea to have a new building to house the Legislative Assembly was conceived by Dr. M Chenna Reddy, the then Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, who laid the foundation stone on 19th March, 1980. Later it was completed under the inspiring and dynamic regime of the then Speaker Sri G. Narayana Rao. It was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister of India Sri Rajiv Gandhi on 3rd August, 1985.

Gandhi Statue

A 22-Feet tall bronze Statue of Mahatma Gandhi, in a posture of meditation, was erected in the Assembly Premises. It is billed as the biggest in the country. Though the actual size of the statue is the same as its replica in the Parliament premises, the statue her is taller because of its 6-foot pedestal.

The words My Life is My Message are inscribed on the pedestal of the Statue. Water fountains have been constructed on the approach road. About Rs. 55 lakhs have been spent for the installation of the statue.

The Statue was unveiled by His Excellence, the Governor of Andhra Pradesh, Dr. C. Rangarajan on 15th August, 1998 i.e., 51st Independence Day, with the hope of inspiring the people, particularly the legislators, to follow the path shown by the Mahatma.

The idea of erecting the mammoth statue of Mahatma Gandhi was conceived by, and implemented with the help of, the Hon'ble Speaker Sri Yanamala Rama Krishnudu.
