Remedy not finished with Alan Wake

Company CEO Matias Myllyrinne confirms that studio has "put things into motion" for new entry in franchise; hints that next game to be released digitally.

Alan Wake developer Remedy has more in store for its psychological thriller series beyond next week's Alan Wake's American Nightmare. Speaking with gaming blog Joystiq, Remedy CEO Matias Myllyrinne said plans for a new game in the franchise are already "in motion."

The developer said its main focus presently is finishing Alan Wake's American Nightmare and releasing it later this month, but the company is also looking to its future.

"It's too early to talk about what our next move is, but we've obviously put things into motion," he said. "We're crowd pleasers, we'll do what the audience wants, 'cause usually that's the good business move as well."

Myllyrinne also dropped a hint that the studio's next title will be released digitally, as opposed to on-disc at retail.

"I'm loving the digital [distribution] side and we'll see how that evolves, but just being able to give people quick access to bite-size chunks of gaming is maybe more fun than working for years and years," he said.

The original Alan Wake is due out on the PC on February 16, with American Nightmare following on February 22 on Xbox Live. For more on the latest game in the series, check out GameSpot's most recent preview of American Nightmare.

digital's fine with me... although they should take into consideration releasing a physical copy as well, which is always better than digital

I hope they do come out with American Nightmare for the PC. Please god don't leave PC out of the loop this time. No more BS about piracy or possible loss of sales.

I loved Alan Wake and really thought it was a bit underrated. It was really immersive and had some of the best lighting I've seen in games, next to Uncharted 2.

I don't mind digital games, but they aren't cheaper. At least not when they first come out.

As for saving space, I don't know, but u don't save much space when you have to download everybody elses digital service. You have to have Steam for some games, origin for others (i.e. EA games and their affiliates), and then you have to have one for Amazon (not sure about gamestop or anybody else, just who I have dealt with). So the space you save you lose with 20 different digital services.

I do like the speed factor, but hate not having the instuctions right in front of u. And the game prices seem to drop quicker (especially on Steam).

I dont see why there so much hate towards digital. Honestly, who cares how you get the games? PC games used to come on disc, now its digital. Honestly, its quicker and saves more space, plus its cheaper.

Digital games should never hit consoles. The day Digital games become the main source of games on consoles is the day consoles become nothing but PC's with crappier hardware and different coding. And thats the direction consoles are going in at the moment anyways.

Also, Remedy should try something else other then Alan Wake, work on a new IP. They obviously won't though. What else can we expect in 2012.

I wish to have a full fledged sequel but I still like this idea because now it won't take forever to see more Alan Wake games. I just hope they don't milk it and know when to bring it to an end.

Well everyone here ain't happy about the "digital distribution" of future Alan Wake games. The reason behind this is because the original Alan Wake took ovefr 5 years to make. That is a "LONG" time. I guess the developers want a faster process and thus we have the "digital market".

Sorry ppl, but it seems like Remedy may just be doing digital content from now on. I'll be buying the new Alan Wake game anyway 'cause its a good action romp

I was hoping that Remedy was secretly working an a full fledged Alan Wake 2 game will making this American Nightmare digital game. Apparently this is not the case at all.

I'd rather see a full-fledged Alan Wake 2 than another small downloadable title where the focus isn't on story. I'm sure American Nightmare is going to be really fun, but the original Alan Wake was a unique masterpiece.

im sorry but I beat the first one and it never really clicked with me. I even got the bonus dlc missions with my game and just couldn't get myself to go back into it. I know I will probably get down rated for this but not every game is for everyone and those who like it looks like good news for you but it isn't for me.

I'm happy to see they will have a sequel in the series and hope it might be the last sort of, but just like this one I will not be getting this one at all because I like having the physical copy of a game rather then the Digital Download. So Remedy Entertainment please change your minds on this please, if not I'm going to pass on it. So peace and chicken grease

at first I thought they meant the game wasn't done, but now I get it - so far, I'd be happier with a full release, but isn't that always the way. These DLCs feel like teases a lot of the time

    @Icehearted
    Good comparison.

I liked Bioshock 2, but it was not as good of a game in my mind as the original. In fact, it seemed like a pretty big stretch of the lore/canon. (Wait, this other villainous antagonist existed and I never ran across any hints of her in the entire first game?)

Don't get me wrong. I enjoyed Bioshock 2 a lot and I'm sure that if Remedy decides to continue Alan Wake I'll enjoy the next game to feature him as well.

But the magic wasn't quite the same with Bioshock 2 because the story felt stretched and farfetched due to the need to transform a game clearly intended to be a one-shot into a continued series.

With both games, Bioshock and Alan Wake, the magic wasn't so much in the gameplay itself (though both contained some innovative attributes with Plasmids and the Flashlight respectively) but it was the tightness of the storyline and narrative that made them gems.

Hmm. I loved the original Alan Wake more than just about every other game of this current generation so far, but I'm not terribly pleased with this decision. Hear me out.

Original Alan Wake seemed like it was very much envisioned to be a single one-off. The story revolves strongly about Wake being a writer. Unless there is more than one ancient demonic-like entity just waiting for a writer to come along, it seems to be a stretch to continue this series beyond what has already happened with the first game and the DLC.

I think Remedy created a gem of a game here, but it strikes me that with the setting and the story to date trying to find something else for Alan to be the main protagonist in seems like more than a little bit of a stretch.

Exactly how many supernatural, slumbering forces can one everyday sort of writer happen to blunder into on his vacations?

Remedy has absolutely earned some awesome brownie points with this sort of gamer, but I'd be happier hearing that they'd finished up Alan's story and were starting up with a new IP.

I thought Alan Wake was a great game, so a sequel is certainly wanted, but if Remedy thinks I am going to want to download the game instead of physically owning it, they are sadly mistaken. The thing with digital content is that the people supplying it to you won't do so forever. Lets say 8 years down the road you want to go retro and play Alan Wake, but you discover that you can't because your hard drive is corrupted - Well you are screwed and have no way of obtaining the game. Now if you own the physical copy then you can play any time you want, even 20 years down the road. Physical products for me please!
