Playing through game demos and unlocking content for the full game isn't a new practice, as developers have been doing it for months.  However, offering new content for other games is kind of new, as it entices players to try out something other than the product they're demoing.  Microsoft has announced that two upcoming Xbox Live demos will do just that, giving the players ample rewards for other games merely by going through the main demos.

Microsoft's Kinect device has already done a serviceable job connecting kids with their favorite characters.  Just look at the success of Once Upon a Monster from Tim Schafer and his team at Double Fine Productions.  But it looks like that's just the beginning of the team-up between Microsoft and Sesame Street, as the company introduced a whole new level of interactive programming for kids last night during its CES keynote.

Yesterday marked the final CES keynote for Microsoft, and the company certainly went out with a bang, in some folks' eyes. Company chief Steve Ballmer revealed an official release date for the Windows PC version of Kinect, which is set to hit stores at the beginning of next month.

LAS VEGAS – Microsoft executive Steve Ballmer did talk about games during his final keynote of the Consumer Electronics Show. The Xbox 360 has sold over 66 million pieces of hardware since it first launched in 2006, including 10 million in Q4 2011. Microsoft’s motion-sensor Kinect device has continued to sell well with an installed base of 18 million gamers. And Microsoft now has a robust community of over 40 million Xbox Live users.

LAS VEGAS -- During his final keynote at CES 2012, Microsoft executive Steve Ballmer announced that the company has partnered with News Corporation to launch a series of new apps for Xbox LIVE that will feature content from News Corp.’s leading broadcast, news and Web properties. The apps will incorporate content — as well as voice- and motion-activated controls using Kinect for Xbox 360 — from brands including Fox Broadcasting Co. (FOX), Fox News Channel, IGN Entertainment and The Wall Street Journal.

LAS VEGAS - At AT&T's Developer Summit being held here in Las Vegas ahead of the opening of CES 2012, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer made a surprise appearance to help launch some new Windows Phones from HTC and Nokia. As he often does, Ballmer ran on stage with an excited scream as he was introduced by AT&T's CES Ralph de la Vega on stage.

Every year, Microsoft has a gaggle of Xbox Live Arcade titles held aside as part of a Block Party promotion, to entice subscribers to take part in some of the better downloadable titles out there.  It's been doing this for the past few years, and this morning, it continued to buck the trend with the announcement of XBLA House Party 2012, which includes what could very well be the best titles in the promotion to date -- including the long-awaited I Am Alive from Ubisoft.

Microsoft Studios is using CES 2012 to premiere its first flight simulator game in years. Although the physical location is in Las Vegas for the annual trade show, the new game is set in Hawaii. Microsoft Flight, a PC game that lets players jump into the challenge, fun, and freedom of flight, will be available as a free download this spring, giving players the freedom to fly the skies over the beautiful Big Island of Hawaii, complete a variety of exciting missions, test their skills in flying challenges, or find hidden aerocaches on the island.

Tor Books has released Halo: Primordium, the second novel in acclaimed science fiction author Greg Bear’s Forerunner Saga, a prequel series to the hugely successful Halo video game franchise for the Xbox 360.  An unabridged audio book edition will publish simultaneously with the novel.

As you saw from a report that we posted this weekend, Microsoft had big problems with its UFC on Xbox Live app.  Despite allowing select users to watch the fight for free, there were a number of technical errors that marred the experience, mainly the lack of a solid video feed and the inability to watch an offered replay.  But Microsoft is aware of said problems, and is promising to make the matter right for subscribers.

For those of you who think that independent gaming has been overshadowed by the likes of bigger publishers and game licenses, well, yeah, they do dominate the industry.  But there's still room for a modest success story, as two guys who put together one of 2010's more entertaining independent games have recently announced that it has sold over a million downloads.  And that game?  Why, Super Meat Boy, of course.

In a sign that CES continues to grow despite the struggling global economic situation, 94 companies will exhibit in the new Eureka Park TechZone at the 2012 International CES. The dedicated area was created partnership with the National Science Foundation, Startup America Partnership, CNet and UK Trade & Investment (UKTI), showcasing innovative start-ups and entrepreneurs. Owned and produced by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), the 2012 International CES, the world’s largest tradeshow for consumer technology, is scheduled January 10-13, 2012 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

When it was first announced back at E3, the UFC on Xbox Live app definitely had a few fans excited, especially with the promise of being able to watch live pay-per-views through the convenience on your console.  Unfortunately, last night proved that sometimes if something seems too good to be true, it usually is.

The Consumer Electronics Show, which will kick off once again early next year in Las Vegas, Nevada, is the biggest showcase of upcoming TV's, home theaters and other pieces of home and travel technology.  And each year, a number of companies take part and attract thousands of attendees.  However, the upcoming 2012 show will mark a significant change for one company in particular -- Microsoft.
