First Person Shooter

Consoles and PC's have had a slow month interms of new AAA quality games arriving for your respected platform. While January got off to a slow start, it quickly recovered to bring us high quality tittles through digital distribution. Plenty of great downloadable arcade tittles were made available through XBLA, PSN and Steam, giving us many hidden gems on the digital marketplace. Let's look back at the games we reviewed over the past month.

When you think "Batman" and "video game", you usually think of something dark, foreboding and completely involving, like last year's stellar release of Batman: Arkham City.  But you don't really think shooter, nor anything that goes tongue firmly in cheek, do you?  That's why it's so fascinating to see Monolith, the developers behind the F.E.A.R. series, go against type and create a game like Gotham City Impostors.  Not only is it something you'd never expect from the DC Comics Universe, but, holy rusted metal Batman, it's actually fun.

Every Tuesday, Sony brings its PlayStation faithful new content, add-ons for your favorite games, Themes and avatars for your PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable. Again another standard week of PSN goods you can get, but for the most part the main draw are going to be demos. Twisted Metal is finally going to hit store shelves and the fans of  the series will be eager to get their hands on the multiplayer demo now available.

Another week is upon us and another batch of new content has arrived on Xbox Live. If you were a fan of Rockstar's L.A Noire. Then you will happy to see that all the DLC for the game is at a low price. If you were holding out on getting the DLC for the game then now is your chance. As personal recomendation, I would get the Nicholson Electroplating case and skip out on Reefer Madness.

Every Tuesday, Sony brings its PlayStation faithful new content, add-ons for your favorite games, Themes and avatars for your PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable. Not the best week for new content for new content on the PSN. If you missed Duke Nukem Forever then here is your chance to get the king as he finally makes his debut on current gen consoles. Not the best game on the market, but worth a pick up if your Duke Nukem Fan.

Lets face it, your have probably played at least one third person shooter this console generation. Minus the story, they have all similar game-styles with little differences in between. With the Gears of War franchise retiring last September, the third person shooter genre is looking for someone to take reins and lead the genre into the next generation. After spending two hours with the game, I came away relativity surprised on what Saber Interactive was bring and how Inversion could be one of the biggest surprise hits of 2012.

It's no secret that Activision is working along with Treyarch on a new Call of Duty game for release later this year.  It's become a yearly franchise and, hey, it's made this much money for them, so why stop now?  The only question remains is just what game we can really expect.  Another classic shooter?  A Future Warfare title?  Well, according to a registered domain name that was recently taken, the title may have just gotten a little clearer -- Call of Duty: Black Ops 2.

A few days ago, we reported on the promising rumors that Valve was, in fact, working on the highly anticipated Half Life 3, through the evidence of a website and a manufactured shirt.  However, it turns out to be all for naught, as the company today laid said rumors to rest.  Ah, well, we can dream, can't we?

12.25.11

Valve had an outstanding year in 2011 with the release of the highly anticipated Portal 2, a game that went leaps and bounds over the original, both with single player and co-op components.  So all that's left to wonder now is...what's left for 2012, aside from the upcoming Counter Strike: Global Offensive?  Well, if Internet hints indicate anything, the company is hard at work on yet another long-awaited sequel -- the follow-up to Half-Life 2.

12.21.11

Despite some problems with the Call of Duty Elite service, Activision is fully dedicated to its billion dollar baby, Modern Warfare 3.  In a recent announcement on the exclusive Elite program Roll Call, Robert Bowling, a long-time member of the Infinity Ward team, announced a release date that would not only kick off the run of downloadable content for the game, but also new features on Elite.

12.10.11

Duke Nukem Forever may not have been a hit with all the critics (one even went as far as to rate it a 0 out of 10...wow, really?), but the fact of the matter is, it was still a success with 2K Games, and no doubt that the Duke will return for a sequel somewhere down the road.  In the meantime, Gearbox is packing this game's release with plenty of DLC, and this Tuesday it'll have a whole new batch for dedicated Duke dudes and dudettes to play around with.

As great as mainstream first-person shooters are (we’re looking at you, Battlefield 3 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3), we do like checking out ones that go off the beaten path, just to see what they offer to the genre.  We’re talking about oddities like Po’ed and certain Doom mods that twist the typical rules at running around and shooting things entirely.  So we were more than happy to see what WXP Games was doing with its genre-bending Xbox Live Arcade release, Xotic.

Plot?  What kind of first-person shooter needs a plot?  A story can easily weigh down a game that doesn’t need it.  Just look at Battlefield 3 and you’ll see what I mean.  Thankfully, the developers behind Serious Sam realize that a story should not only take the back seat, but pretty much sit in the trunk of the car.  It’s always been about over-the-top action and hilarity, intended and unintended alike, as you blast enemies to kingdom come using a large scale of weapons.  And Serious Sam 3: BFE follows suit – for better or for worse.
