E10+ - Everyone 10+

Gotta love it when you see rumors leading up to the release of a big title, but without confirmation from the company that's releasing said title, and then they come out of nowhere and release it anyway, and the audience remains just as thrilled as they would be if it was announced.  Konami, you sneaky devils.  Anyway, after 21 years of being stuck strictly in arcades (we'll forget the crappy PC port exists), The Simpsons Arcade Game has finally gotten a home release for digital download.  And as expected, it's been worth the wait.

Know what's great?  When an independent game darling gets its time to shine in the spotlight thanks to a generous publisher.  We're seeing a lot more of these hit the gaming scene, and personally, I love it, though a little more advertising for said product wouldn't be a bad thing.  This time around, Konami has published Puddle, a 2010 Independent Gaming Award darling made by Neko Entertainment.  Just in playing it for a few minutes, you see where its appeal lies.  Unfortunately, it doesn't really let on how tough the journey gets until you really get into it.

Consoles and PC's have had a slow month interms of new AAA quality games arriving for your respected platform. While January got off to a slow start, it quickly recovered to bring us high quality tittles through digital distribution. Plenty of great downloadable arcade tittles were made available through XBLA, PSN and Steam, giving us many hidden gems on the digital marketplace. Let's look back at the games we reviewed over the past month.

Even though he sadly passed away a few years ago, the legend of Michael Jackson will never be forgotten.  The pop star brought us a number of classics over the years, and last year, Ubisoft opted to celebrate his legacy with the new game Michael Jackson: The Experience.  Now, he makes the journey to the PlayStation Vita in time for the system's launch next month.  But can the game still be a Thriller?

Well over a year after its release on the market, the Kinect motion device is really growing into its own for Xbox 360 users, not only with a few family-related efforts (Kinect Sports, Dance Central) but also a decent amount of games dedicated to the "hardcore" crowd (Child of Eden, Rise of Nightmares).  But there's not too much of a market for downloadable Kinect games as of yet, though Fruit Ninja Kinect is doing fairly well.  Maybe that'll change once people see how good the haunted house adventure game Haunt is.  Maybe.

OTTAWA, QUEBEC – Videogames have always played an important role in NHL All Star Games and Skill Competitions. With 2K Sports out of the hockey simulation game now, EA Sports had the 2012 NHL All Star Game in Ottawa all to itself. The game maker used NHL 12 to showcase each of the skills competitions on Saturday night. And Electronic Arts also used the game to simulate the big game on Sunday. According to NHL 12, Team Alfredsson will continue its winning ways with a 12-10 victory over Team Chara. You can see the simulation in the video below.

There’s nothing wrong with trying to design a platformer that appeals to the old school.  A lot of us grew up playing games on the NES, SNES or some older system, and fondly remember the good ol’ days where the likes of Mario and Sonic truly got their start.  But even with the boldest original idea, your platformer doesn’t stand a chance if the gameplay isn’t solid enough.  There are countless Genesis games we can easily point out that suffer from this issue.  And, sadly, Crocodile Entertainment’s Zack Zero is stuck right alongside them.

Know what pains me in this industry?  When a truly magnificent game goes unnoticed due to a lack of an ad campaign or a "push", if you will.  That's how I feel about Rayman Origins, which I consider one of the best games of 2011.  Unfortunately, it's barely cleared 50,000 units sold, showing signs that the project is a failure.  No, it's not.  It's a tremendously fun game that shouldn't be missed by anyone -- even if you're not crazy about platformers.  Thankfully, Ubi appears to be giving it another shot, this time on the PlayStation Vita, just in time for its launch.

Know what we don't see too much of anymore?  2-D platformers.  Granted, we did just get Rayman Origins last year, which is absolutely fantastic (and $20 at Toys R' Us if you somehow missed out), but we mean like the classic platformer, the kind where you could go about your journey, collecting stuff and beating enemies with combos.  Well, Square Enix and TikGames have brought that feeling back with ScaryGirl, and while it's got its problems, it's still a haunting good time.

"Basketball is my favorite sport, I love the way they dribble up and down the court." Every time I turn on my Xbox 360 and boot up NBA 2K12, I absolutely love hearing that song. Yes, I'm a lifelong basketball fan, and yes, I can name each and every single player in that intro scene. Even though I'm an all around gamer at heart, I truly enjoy playing sports titles the most--as I'm an avid sports fan as well. And while I've forgiven the NBA for their incredibly petchulant ways this past offseason, NBA2K12 was what keep my interest piqued. So, while NBA 2K12 is still fresh on my mind, I want to make some predictions/suggestions for 2KGames as we inch closer to NBA 2K13 later this year.

The holiday season is officially upon us at sundown tonight. Children will be gathered around their Channukah menorahs, spinning their dreidels, eating potato latkes--and inviting their gentile friends to partake in the traditions that were so foreign and interesting in elementary school--at least that's what the kids told me back then. Then, a few days later that naughty or nice list will be coming into play as kids all over the world run down the stairs to see if the red-sutied cookie monster aka Santa Claus has brought them some amazing gifts. Gamers though--what do we want for all the holidays? Isn't it obvious--GAMES. We're going to give you oblivious gift-seekers five games to run to the stores to sweep up for the gamer in your life featuring NBA 2K12, among others.

Capcom's getting a pretty good jump on 2012, with Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, Street Fighter x Tekken and Akura's Wrath set to launch sometime around the spring.  But the company also has a few classics in store, as it's repackaging eight Xbox Live Arcade favorites in a retail collection exclusively for Xbox 360.  Fans may appreciate it, but couldn't have Capcom done a little more with it?
