Winter Decorating
Posted by Arwen Mosher in Homemaking on Wednesday, January 11, 2012
When I was a kid I dreaded the end of the Christmas season when Mom took the decorations down. The house looked bereft without them.
As an adult I have more control - this explains why our tree is still up even though it’s Ordinary Time now - but eventually the greenery and twinkle lights must go. On that January day, I’m inevitably left looking around my living room feeling sad at its bareness.

STOP, already!
Posted by Lynn Wehner in Just me on Monday, January 31, 2011
THIS, my friends, is my front sidewalk. And oh, how I am struck with the appropriateness of that big red STOP sign at the end of the trail.
My January 2011 mantra:
“STOP snowing!”
“STOP being so cold!”
“STOP this winter, I want to get off!”
I’m curious, for those of you living in wintry zones, are you feeling like a prisoner to mountainous snow banks, icy gutters, and the panicky feeling that it’s only a matter of time before your roof & ceilings have issues? Or can you still look at each new snow with serenity?
I’m trying really hard to see this “roadside snow” with the same romance that I see “forest snow.” But my heart’s just not in it. I’m begging you to give me a reason or two to love this ... there’s a lot of winter left!

Warm Wishes and a Hot Toddy
Posted by Danielle Bean in Food on Tuesday, January 11, 2011
When fellow Faith & Family blogger Hallie Lord told me to expect something ... perishable ... in the mail this Christmas, I wasn’t sure what to expect.
I was delighted to find out that she meant she had packed up and mailed me all the ingredients for Hot Toddies, along with a simple recipe.
How very cool is that? How sweet and festive and thoughtful! This creative gift idea is one that I might just... READ MORE
Icy Snow

If you ask my son Charlie, it was pajamas that did the trick.
Last night, he convinced his brothers to wear their pajamas inside out and that (along with the spoon each boy tucked under his pillow) well that was the cause of all this snow we’re having in Georgia today.
“It worked,” Charlie said this morning, staring in disbelief at a yard filled with snow. “I can’t believe it worked!”
Cause and effect... READ MORE
Winter Wonderland
Posted by Lynn Wehner in Just me on Thursday, December 16, 2010
In many parts of the U.S., snow has fallen already this winter season. From flurries to blizzards, the white stuff has made its presence known. Dreamily thinking of that snow, I remembered the following little reflection I wrote a couple of years ago to show a group of kids how you can paint images in people’s minds with your words.
I know, I know, this is the same person who, just a month ago, blogged... READ MORE

How Blue Are You?
Posted by Danielle Bean in Health on Monday, January 25, 2010
Some experts in the UK have done their homework and come to the conclusion that last Monday, January 18 was the “worst day of the year” for 2010.
“The name ‘Blue Monday’ came about after British psychologist Cliff Arnall devised a formula five years ago for just why people feel so dispirited every year on this day. He came up with a complicated equation that contains seven variables such as weather,... READ MORE
Mashed Potato Soup: Cheap, Easy & Delicious
Posted by Danielle Bean in Food on Tuesday, January 19, 2010
The heart of winter is a great time to experiment with bone-warming soups and stews for dinner.
What I like most about many soup recipes is the fact that they can be so simple, versatile, and economical. What’s not to love?
Today I thought I’d share this new-to-me recipe for mashed potato soup. Mashed potatoes make it creamy without added fat.
This recipe makes a very simple soup, but you can dress... READ MORE
