Perfect Christmas Book

by a beloved author and illustrator

Here’s something to add to your last minute shopping list—or tuck this away for next year: A Christmas Manger, featuring the illustrations of H.A. Rey and the sacred words of Matthew and Luke.

The book, originally published in 1942, features pop-out figures to complete an Advent scene—along with a handy pocket to store them all for next year.

Many thanks to Charlotte at Waltzing Matilda for this great... READ MORE

When Other People's Kids Are Sad

What do you do?

This afternoon, my teenager Adam and I found ourselves in a busy discount store surrounded by holiday shoppers. The atmosphere was tense, made worse by large crowds and loud Christmas music. My greatest desire was to “get out of here ASAP”, but I ended up waiting for my Adam for a few moments in a crazy section of the store.

As I stood doing mental exercises to keep myself calm, I spotted not one... READ MORE

Black Thursday?

Should shopping become a staple of Thanksgiving?

Rachel’s lovely article today has me thinking about my holiday shopping, so when I ran across this article at USA Today, I was greatly disturbed. It seems that some of our major retailers, including Target, Walmart and Toys R Us, have decided to continue their encroachment into the family holiday by opening during the nighttime hours of Thanksgiving.

Target spokeswoman Molly Snyder says the decision... READ MORE

Making a List

Christmas gifts for boys

While I’m sure there are those who have finished their Christmas shopping (go you! You’re awesome), I am not one of those people.

I thought it might be nice for the mere mortals among us to share ideas on toys that stand the test of time, in case we’ve got some more shopping to do.

Today: toys for boys!

Here’s my list of a few items that are worth buying, things that last and get used and enjoyed... READ MORE

For Ladies Only

mentioning unmentionables

My favorite bra.

Although motherhood is my vocation and I wouldn’t take back one moment, my, ah, upper torso has clearly suffered the effects of nursing lots of babies.

Once I was able to toss the nursing bras for good, the hunt was on for the perfect bra to battle the effects of gravity. I’ve shopped many a lingerie sale at Penneys and Macys over the years. But in the end, there is only one style... READ MORE

Sip Stealing?

Is drinking prior to paying permissible?

If we’re friends on Facebook, perhaps you saw the little post on my profile yesterday that has garnered close to 150 passionate opinions:

Here is a philosophical question I am debating with someone important in my life. If you are shopping in a store and fully intend to purchase a diet coke, is it permissible to open and drink the beverage as you shop, before paying for it. I say “no” - what do you... READ MORE

Cheap Thrills

Check out my yard sale finds!

I didn’t actually need a summer purse. I had a nice bag in a light color that would go with everytning.

But when I walked past a display of handbags in colorful prints, I started thinking how nice it would be to have something little more fun, a little more summery, a lot less boring than my safe, neutral-toned standby. But not at department store prices.

Luckily, it’s yard sale season. I hit a... READ MORE

My Fashion Find

Where do you hunt for bargains?

Since my birthday, anniversary, and Mother’s Day all occur within a few weeks, I usually make it easy on my husband who would be hard pressed to come up with three gifts on his own.

On my birthday this year, after we spent a lovely spring morning hiking and doing lots of nature photography in a nearby state park, we proceeded to an outlet mall where I went on a (restrained) shoppping spree.

One... READ MORE

The Cute Shoes Win

In May a (young, old or in-between) woman’s thoughts turn to —Sandals!

We need at least 3 pair: the sturdy, everyday equivalent of a jogging shoe; medium heels for any time we want to look good but will be on our feet for an extended period; and high heels for Sunday Mass, dinner dates, and weddings. Thanks to last year’s end of season sales, I already had everything I needed. But ...

While out last... READ MORE
