Oh Downton Abbey!

Was anyone else counting down the days to the premiere of Downton Abbey, Season 2 this past Sunday? What is it that makes this show so irresistible?
Last year, we stumbled across the weekly drama on PBS one evening, and I was hooked. I had been seeing little comments here and there about the show, but never paid much attention. Then I watched five minutes and I am now a devoted fan. Oh Lord Grantham,... READ MORE
Tiny Little Things

Last night a variety of factors converged in a sleep trainwreck: Linus and Ambrose both awoke every two hours all night long.
Six wakeups each times two babies. Do that piece of math and you’ll understand why I crawled out of bed in a stupor this morning.
But blessedly, I checked my email soon afterward and found a message from a dear aunt whose two boys are now in their twenties. She’d gotten our... READ MORE
When Hope Seems Lost
Posted by Rachel Balducci in Family on Thursday, December 22, 2011
Once upon a time, there was a boy named Larry. He was a good boy, raised in a good family. But somewhere, somehow, Larry lost his way.
He wandered in the desert for many years, seeking solace in drugs and alcohol. In the midst of this, his parents prayed. They prayed and their friends prayed and they continued to hope for their son, even as he seemed to slip further and further away.
This boy, Larry,... READ MORE
Timeless Toys for Girls

Yesterday we discussed tried and true toys for boys. Up next: girls!
I am especially interested to hear what you have to say because I am in the severely-disadvantaged category here. What do girls like? What do they reach for time and again?
In our own daughter, we’ve noticed an intense love of dolls. Right now, that’s at the top of her list. That and my make-up drawer (yowzah!).
So what do you recommend... READ MORE
Ring Gone? Suit Up!

A woman’s husband accidentally throws away her treasured engagement ring. Woe! But then he volunteers to comb the landfill for it. Hero! And then he actually finds it. Wonder of wonders!
Did I mention she’s also pregnant?
It’s like a fairy tale, albeit a slightly off-beat one. Everything about this story made me smile, right down to the compassionate attitude of the garbage plant manager. Read the whole thing here.
Mending a Broken Heart

As the resident single person on this mom blog I will occasionally write about single gal happenings … so won’t you indulge me, just this once?
Let me get it all out and then I’ll be done with it.
Break ups stink.
There I said it.
I can only imagine how many women have already written about this topic. But it’s okay because it feels good to talk it out. That’s what gals do, right?
I’m sure you... READ MORE
Small Favors

A good friend of mine told me she was getting a new vacuum today. I tried to suppress my interest because I have strong opinions about vacuum cleaners. I’m crazy that way.
“What kind are you getting,” I casually asked.
“A Miele?” she answered. She said her sister had recommended it.
I was embarrassed by how excited I was for my friend. It was all I could do not to ask her a million questions about... READ MORE
Down Awareness Month

October is Down Awareness Month and I wanted to post about it mostly to give you the opportunity to see one of the sweetest videos I’ve come across in a while.
I met Amy when my family was out in Utah this summer and started reading her blog after that. Her son Frankie has Down syndrome and when I saw this video I knew you would love it. I think it represents clearly all the love and joy and beauty... READ MORE
Sibling Gifts

Once or twice a year all my siblings and I are in the same place.
Last weekend was one of those times. The six of us went out to dinner for my youngest sister’s birthday. We laughed so hard my stomach ached afterward, but my eyes also welled up a couple times as we shared stories and support and joy at being together.
What a gift my parents gave us in each other.
One of the hard things for me as... READ MORE
Keeping Christ in Christian

A friend of mine recently shared this perfect cartoon and yes it’s obviously hilarious but it also gave me lots to think about.
It’s very easy, when trying to do the right thing, to get caught up in a black/white way of thinking. It’s easy to point out how others are falling short in being a Christian—and then lose sight of our own failings in the midst of that.
When I think about the times I have... READ MORE
