What's Cookin'?

Jill Dubien

Are you baking this weekend?

I think we’re going to add these (which I found on Pinterest and traced to this blog) to our rotation.

Because they’re cute.

And because that’s exactly how much frosting I can tolerate.

How about you? Trying anything new for Christmas this year?

Apple Time Is Here!

Culinary Wednesday

You can tell you’re in the Sockey home in September through November by sense of smell alone.

Apples are bound to be on the menu in some form or another several days a week. My top three are apple pie, apple crisp, and apple sauce. Apples will also appear in salads, and now and again I serve Fried Apples ‘n’ Onions as a side dish, in homage to Laura Ingalls Wilders’ very hungry Almanzo in Farmer... READ MORE

A Grand Old Flag

in time for the Fourth

As is my yearly Fourth of July custom, I am sharing with you my favorite patriotic cake—one I have made myself and can vouch for its deliciousness.

The decorating is a little labor intensive (by my standards), but your loved ones will appreciate your efforts. They will show their gratitude by devouring your hard work.

FLAG CAKE
Ingredients
18 tablespoons (2 1/4 sticks) unsalted butter at room temperature... READ MORE

My Latest Appliance Crush

My parents bought me this pretty little thing for my birthday this year.

I am thrilled! And excited! And confirmed in my theory that true happiness comes in the form of kitchen appliances.

Just kidding.

Sort of.

Well, I am happy, and it has a little bit to do with the sweet machine kneading a 2-pound loaf of country white on my counter top right now.

I have been enthusiastically checking out the tips... READ MORE

It's a Muffin Kind of Morning

Homemade Made Easy

I love muffins! So easy! So homemade! So flexible! So very yummy!

Here’s what I’m hoping to convince a kid or two to help me bake up this morning:

1 egg
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup white sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
(We might even put some blueberries in there)

Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Grease muffin... READ MORE

Craving Cookies?

Imitate the Girl Scouts - make your own!

As previous discussions on this site have proven, Girl Scout cookies are a controversial issue.

But I think there are a couple things we can all agree on: Girl Scout cookies, however delicious, are pretty expensive on a per-cookie basis. They’re also not available year-round.

A couple years ago, poking around food blogs on the Internet (as you do) I discovered a wonderful solution to this problem:... READ MORE

How the Piggy Cookie Crumbles

It feels good to say YES

(Updated: Here’s the recipe!)

Two days ago, 4-year-old Daniel spent the better part of an hour browsing the pages of one of the girls’ cookie cookbooks. Frequently, he called me over to show me hat he thought was a particularly yummy-looking photo.

I found his interest in baked goods endearing and I was in a capable mood, so I told him to pick any recipe he wanted and I would buy the ingredients and... READ MORE

Got Cookies?

Try out a berry delicious family favorite

As Kate Wicker noted last week, the sweet scent of seasonal cookie swaps is in the air!

I’m actually participating in one with some friends this evening, and we’ll be teaming it with a simple supper and some mid-December relaxation. Ahhh.

I thought I’d share my recipe for the Raspberry Squares I’ll be bringing (recipe adapted from an old Southern Living Christmas cookies book). They are coconut-chewy... READ MORE
