Attention Single Girls!
Faith and Family Live! | Posted by DariaSockey in Family on Monday, February 20, 2012
Just hours after reading Danielle’s shout out to Robyn Lee I received a book that we’ll want to get Robyn’s opinion on. And I’ll be sending it to my (single) oldest daughter for her opinion as well. In the meantime, I can tell you that The Catholic Girl’s Survival Guide for the Single Years by Emily Stimpson has a lot going for it. For those who judge books by their covers—need I say more? This one’s... READ MORE
Day After Chocolate

I just arrived back from Walmart with a bag full of pecan turtles, Ghiradelli squares, Dove hearts,Belgian truffles and red and pink M&Ms. This yearly pilgrimage to the Valentine candy aisle takes place every February 15th, except when Lent starts early. It was fun to people watch while picking out these half price goodies. All the customers were women. Some of them kept picking things up and putting... READ MORE
A new closet for $7.99
Faith and Family Live! | Posted by DariaSockey in Homemaking on Friday, February 10, 2012
Since our marriage in 1980, Bill and I have lived in 8 different homes. Only once did we have the luxury of a walk-in closet. Because both our budgets and our architectural whims run to vintage farmhouses, we’ve often had to share some very small closets. That’s the case in our current home as well, where our garments have hung in a mere 3 and one half foot space. True, there is a large hall closet... READ MORE
The Church Was Right on Birth Control
Faith and Family Live! | Posted by DariaSockey in News on Wednesday, February 08, 2012
It’s been a good week to be a believing Catholic in the United States. Tumultuous, but good. It’s a cause of legitimate pride to see our Bishops taking a bold stand against the HHS contraception sterilization mandate. It’s been gratifying to see so many non-Catholics joining us in protest. Whatever they think of the Church’s teaching on contraception—and we can assume most of them disagree with it—they... READ MORE
Present at a Martyrdom

Today’s Liturgy of the Hours includes this eyewitness account of the martyrdom of St. Paul Miki and companions, which took place in 1597
The crosses were set in place. Father Pasio and Father Rodriguez took turns encouraging the victims. Their steadfast behavior was wonderful to see. The Father Bursar stood motionless, his eyes turned heavenward. Brother Martin gave thanks to God’s goodness by singing... READ MORE
Woman Caves?
Faith and Family Live! | Posted by DariaSockey in Just me on Tuesday, January 31, 2012
My married daughter—who only has one child and therefore room to spare—tells me she has recently set up a “man cave” for her husband. This means the guest room now has a huge, old, non flat-screen TV that someone had given them, and a comfortable chair, and the desk top computer. Now Mike can enjoy his beloved hockey games and catch up on computer work at the same time. Bernadette benefits by getting... READ MORE
Everything Changes

At various times in our mothering careers we’ll reach a point where it seems we’ve hit our stride. We feel like we know what we’re doing. We’re confident. We’re experienced. We’re settled. We might even be mentoring newlyweds or young mothers, helping them over the sorts of rough patches that we went through back in the day.
Then, Bang! Something new happens. A sweet teenager becomes rebellious. ... READ MORE
Off She Goes!

It’s almost midnight. My daughter just left on a bus headed to Washington, D.C. After travelling all night long, she’ll spend a day marching and sightseeing, get back on the bus at 4pm, and be back here around midnight. Thank heaven the weather forecast is for a high of 52 degrees. No maternal worries this year about hypothermia, pneumonia, or buses sliding on icy roads. My own mother never allowed... READ MORE
Wacky Warnings, Silly Instructions
Faith and Family Live! | Posted by DariaSockey in Family on Friday, December 30, 2011
My new blow dryer with brush attachments included the usual list of needless warnings that would protect the manufacturer from lawsuits from people who are not very bright. My favorite: “Never use while sleeping”. I posted this on Facebook to give my friends a chuckle. The comments included a few more wacky warnings, including:
“Allergy warning: May contain cashews!” (on a can of cashews)
“Do not... READ MORE
Advent Police?
Faith and Family Live! | Posted by DariaSockey in Family on Monday, December 19, 2011
When I first got married and had children, I was very, very earnest in my efforts to preserve what I imagined to be Traditional Catholic Culture in the Home.
Especially in December. I’d read an old booklet of family advent customs—many of which we implemented and we still use today. But this booklet, plus a few homeschooling families I met, were so big on Keeping Advent as a Season of Penance, that... READ MORE
