Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Balducci combines her writing talent and her life as the parent of five rambunctious boys to deliver a collection of essays on the everyday aspects of mothering boys. Pondering her bald backyard, she longs for grassy vistas she knows she will never see. She has five climbers, diggers, and runners with huge appetites that require ceaseless feeding. She insists that her husband take the lead on Boy Scout hosting and camping activities but manages to get pulled in anyway. Balducci regales with stories of breaking up tussles, teaching etiquette, hosting birthday parties, managing homework regimes, and trying to get her own work done. Mothers of boys will recognize the scenarios and appreciate the labor of love. --Vanessa Bush

3.0 out of 5 stars Very Well Written But This is not a "How To" Book, March 31, 2010
This review is from: How Do You Tuck In a Superhero?: And Other Delightful Mysteries of Raising Boys (Spire Books) (Paperback)
I was really excited to receive this book as we have two little superheros in our home. Always trying to understand a little better the male mind, I couldn't wait to dive in.

How Do You Tuck In a Superhero?: And Other Delightful Mysteries of Raising Boys is a collect of stories written by a mom of five boys. Rachel Balducci is a delightful writer and has an amazing way with words. The book contains approx. 100 mini-stories of life around the Balducci home. She proves that with boys there is never a dull moment.

Even though the title is "How Do You...", this is NOT a parenting book. This is key. In reality, this book is just stories of life with boys. The crazy, unthinkable, scary things that boys do and say. This book is set up more like a gift or coffee-table book.

Momma C's Thoughts: As much as I hate it, I couldn't get into this book. I didn't laugh at the stories or chuckle at raising boys. I really wanted to. But it didn't come. Here are a few reasons why, I believe I had this reaction. With three kiddos five and under, I am tired. Reading some of these stories was like reliving them. Some of the things boys do, I would rather forget! Also, as Moms we tell stories about our kids that are really funny to us and our immediate family but other people just don't get into them like we do. Lastly, boys are boys. They truly are Wild at Heart: Discovering the Secret of a Man's Soul. With that said, unless you like to read stories about other families, I can not recommend this book.

Contradictory of my last comment, there are a few moms who might find this book helpful. You will learn through reading the Balducci stories that raising boys is different than raising girls. Boys think different, are motivated differently, and reason things out differently. For those Moms who haven't been around boys, this book will be comforting as you realize that your our son isn't crazy.

Rachel Balducci has a popular website called Testosterhome. I would suggest reading some of her stories on her blog and then go from there before deciding to purchase this book. I want to reiterate again, this book is very well written. I have a lot of respect for Balducci as she is extremely talented. This is just not a type of book that I am interested in in this stage of life.

5.0 out of 5 stars i.loved.it., March 17, 2010
This review is from: How Do You Tuck In a Superhero?: And Other Delightful Mysteries of Raising Boys (Spire Books) (Paperback)
I just tucked into How Do You Tuck in a Superhero last night and COULD NOT put it down! I love how Rachel captures the creativity and craziness of boys and the beauty of being a mom of boys. And by beauty I mean, the total disruption of what you thought your life would be like as a mother. Being a mom of boys myself, I saw myself in every chapter, laughed outloud, and was reminded once again that I love that God blessed me with 3 wild and sweet boys. If you are a mom of boys or a mom in general, this is one for you!

5.0 out of 5 stars Will Have You Laughing No Matter How Many Boys You Have, August 18, 2010
This review is from: How Do You Tuck In a Superhero?: And Other Delightful Mysteries of Raising Boys (Spire Books) (Paperback)
Even though I only have one son, I have fallen in love with a book about raising 5 sons. How Do You Tuck in a Superhero? And Other Delightful Mysteries of Raising Boys by supermom, Rachel Balducci will have you laughing no matter how many boys are in your household.

Rachel has put together a book of short stories surrounding her adventures with her 5 sons. She appears to be a normal mom who has risen to this herculean task with humor, common sense, and lots of love. She makes the seemingly impossible task of being a mom to so many boys not only seem possible, but downright fun and enjoyable through the personal stories of her family.

My favorite section had to be, "Rules I Can't Believe I Had to Make." Included are such gems as "Don't hogtie your brother and drag him across the yard on the back of your bicycle," and "Never shut your brother in a refrigerator." This second rule also seemingly applies to all major appliances. I found myself laughing but also wondering if I need to have a few similar discussions with my own children.

Throughout her book, she addresses the same fears, struggles and parenting issues the rest of us have, but from a unique, loving and humorous perspective. Rachel has found a way to relate her adventures of raising boys in such a way that at times I was extremely thankful we have only been blessed with one boy and at other times thinking longingly that a whole houseful of boys sounds wonderful.

A wonderful, easy read that will have you laughing out loud at the antics of the Balducci boys and smiling at the love Rachel shares for each of her unique children. Not only a great gift for a mom of many boys, but for any parent who loves their children. How Do You Tuck In a Superhero?: And Other Delightful Mysteries of Raising Boys (Spire Books)
