Russian President Dmitry Medvedev told French President Nicolas Sarkozy in a telephone conversation that the international community's position on Syria should be objective and balanced, the Kremlin said on Wednesday.
Medvedev informed Sarkozy of the meeting on Tuesday between Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and a Russian delegation headed by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov where it was stated that Moscow is prepared to continue being a mediator in the Syrian crisis, but the bloodbath in Syria is unacceptable.
"In context of continuing the difficult work, including by the UN Security Council, to regulate the Syrian crisis, Medvedev called on [Russia's] partners to avoid any hasty unilateral steps," the Kremlin's press service said.
At least 5,400 people have been killed in the Syrian government's 11-month crackdown on protesters, according to the UN. Syrian authorities blame the violence on armed gangs affiliated with al-Qaeda and say more than 2,000 soldiers and police have been killed.
The West has been trying to persuade Moscow to support a resolution effectively authorizing a military operation but Russia has repeatedly insisted that the Western drive for a stronger crackdown on Syria is preparation for a “Libyan scenario.”
Russia, one of President al-Assad’s firm supporters during the uprising against his regime, indicated earlier this week that it would veto the draft resolution calling on Assad to step down. Moscow has proposed its own draft, which the West criticized as being too soft.

- mrgenieUnilateral00:41, 09/02/2012Since Russia is selling weapons, used to kill woman and children, to the Assad regime and more Russia knows it's weapons are used to target children as well, Russia already took unilateral steps. Long before anyone in the Arab world asked for this violence to stop, Russia already said it's a good thing if Children are murdered by Russian weapons as long as Russia earns money with it so some elite people in Moscow can drive big cars.
If selling weapons to murder is not taking unilateral steps, then Medwedew should read the Russian law, as in Russia it's forbidden to hand over weapons to a murderer if I know these weapons are used to kill children.- Sasha(no title)01:05, 09/02/2012@mrgenie: yeah yeah always the same tape. just tell me where was the international community when Bashar Al Assad regime occupied Lebanon for three decades.
- RizaAfghanLoL01:45, 09/02/2012You sir, Yes!!! YOU !!!
Before you jump on Russia, you should know that American is number weapon exporter for this lovely world.
For your information, USA and some other stupid west slaves are trying to shut down a normal Syrian government. Remember Taliban ? Taliban was created by the US using help of Pakistan and now US is doing the same thing in Syria. Creating fake anti-government terrorists just like Taliban using another name.
Syria government is fine and is no threat to any country, it's US and their slaves who are threat to this world and should be stopped by super powers like Russian Federation and China else US and their slaves will keep killing innocent weak countries and make them their slaves.
Now go educate yourself before blaming Great Motherland Russia ;)
