Fighting Our Crosses

and learning to see them a different way

Colleen Duggan offers a lovely reflection over at Catholic Digest, in which she shares some beautiful insight she gained about “fighting her crosses” through the words of her young son.

It’s typically the little stuff Jesus wants me to surrender — the wiggle worm sitting next to me, the request for one more cup of water, or reading the same picture book for the 1000th time. These are the things He wants, the things that make Him happy.

Definitely read the whole thing. You’ll be glad you did.

Maybe, but how do we know what Jesus wants or makes him happy?  It’s not the little things that make my life hard, it’s the BIG things.  The stuff you can’t share or talk about with anyone but maybe your spouse.  Annoying children, I can deal with that.  Huge bills and no idea how we are going to manage, heck that’s when I surrender.

When we settle down, even for a few minutes, and spend time with Our Lord, then we truly know what makes Him happy.  It is sometimes difficult to find the time, but it is pertinent that we do.  It makes us better mothers and better people!

That was very sweet and necessary for me. I had just gotten overly frustrated with my 3-year old who wouldn’t go to sleep while I was trying to nurse the baby to sleep. Thank you for reminding me what a small cross it is if I just snuggle her and get her cozy instead of being harsh and short with her.

Very touching….and so necessary to remember.  Thanks for sharing it with us.

Dear anon,
I’ve been there , and am still there in some ways.
I no longer have my spouse to struggle through these things with.
I have had to deal with those issues and raise my kids mostly
alone and go from being an everpresent wife/ homemaker/ mom
to a working single mother.  I understand how you feel completely.

I don’t say the above to trump up pity but to say with a little authority that Christ is
Able in every way to help you.  And will.  You said a key word in your comment:
surrender.  Tell Him every hour ,if need be, what your needs
are and remind Him you can’t do this alone.  He will send answers.

Also I cannot recommend friendship with St Joseph enough!
He has been an unfailing companion and help to me- with a wonderful
Job that keeps me near my children and pays well, a check I didnt realize I was supposed to receive just in time for Christmas, and a miraculous intervention in a serious health matter
that would have prevented me from caring for my children as I wanted to.

I could write a novel on the subject but I’ll spare you wink
God bless you and KNOW that Heaven is there to help you.
