    Last Week

After getting over our eggnog hangovers, cleaning up pine needles, and getting Jake out of his Santa outfit, we have a few updates for the community. First off, we had our GameSpot Field Trip with a few goodies from Capcom, Blizzard and NCsoft. Then, on Friday, we featured several creative blogs and reviews in the Weekly Wrap-Up, and we sang the praises of Fridays Member Spotlight "Baconbits2004".

    What's Happening?

    GameSpot goes to CES
CES will soon be upon us, and we'll finally have the chance to see some of the more exciting tech toys and gorgeous gizmos for this year. There is no shortage of speculation as rumors of what to expect circle the site. Perhaps information on the next gen of consoles? There will be some information on the Nintendo Wii, PlayStation Vita, and of course news from third parties like Nyko, Logitech, and Mad Catz. You can see some of the highlights from last year's show here.

On the Spot returns at a NEW TIME!
You heard it here first: On the Spot will be returning this Thursday, but at a new time. The show will be live from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. PT. We've got some special things in store for our viewers this week, along with prizes for those who participate in the live chat! So be sure to tune in Thursday, January 12 at 11:00 a.m. PT.

    GameSpot's Mod of the Month - Hallenback77
The people have spoken and have chosen to honor the moderator known as Hallenback77. Some of you may know Hallenback77 from Off Topic, but did you know that he's a bit of a Loony Toons fan? Drop him a PM and say "Congrats!"

Tune in tomorrow for the Blog Bunker: Peculiar People edition.

    1) When was the last time you posted a blog? Make a new blog.
    2) When was the last time you posted a user review? Write a review!
    3) When did you add your avatar or profile banner? If it was more than three years ago, swap it out!
    4) How old is your forum signature? If you're talking about something that happened from the days of yore, replace it.
    5) Track other people's tracked users! Spend some time to see who your friends are tracking and track that user if you enjoy his or her blogs.

Today is "Cuddle Up Day," which gives us the excuse to spend the day wrapped in our snuggies in our favorite gamer perch, perhaps with some shiny new game. What games will you be cuddling up with tonight? Mention it in the comments below and receive a boost to your user profile.

  • Field Trip: 2012 Update

Happy 2012, GameSpotters! Let's take a 2012 field trip to other online communities in the game industry. This week the following sites have updates for the new year: PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Capcom, Blizzard, Activision, and NCsoft.

Starting off with the platform communities: on the official Sony PlayStation 3 blog, the Tester cast for season 3 has been revealed. Microsoft's Xbox 360 does a twist with hip-hop and metal celebrities. Hip-hop artist Big Boi (from OutKast) and Dave Mustaine (Metallica and Megadeth) will play Battlefield 3 on Saturday, January 7, from 1-3 p.m. ET (10 a.m. - noon PT).

Next up: the official game communities. Capcom is hosting a Fright Club in San Francisco on January 19. Fans will have a chance to play both Resident Evil Revelations and Operation Raccoon City. On January 9, the next phase of the X the Line contest begins. (Street Fighter X Tekken.) If that weren't enough, fans of EVO will be happy to read their news about the EVO 2012 lineup . Blizzard celebrates Diablo's 15th birthday and the World of Warcraft dessert contest winners. Activision's social media site, OneofSwords.com, has the best way to name your massively multiplayer online character and reveals some new Skylanders characters. EA has information about a new patch for The Old Republic. They also have a final call out for the Need for Speed: The Run Time Attack - Old Spice Challenge, and NCsoft is forced to return the Charr Plushie by popular demand.

There's your look at the recent community news around the game industry. Let us know if you enjoy these reports by posting in the comments!

  • GameSpot Moderation Policy Changes

    • Posted Dec 9, 2011 11:25 pm GMT
    • By Staff

GameSpot has performed extensive research, evaluations, and surveys about our moderation policies since earlier this year. In November 2011, on December 7, we announced the changes to the Terms of Use agreement.

The following content no longer requires moderation as long as the content does not violate other rules outlined in the Terms of Use agreement.

    - Trolling/Flaming
    - Vulgar language (censor bypass)
    - Foreign languages

Each forum has specific rules and guidelines for tailored experiences, located at the top of each forum and accompanied with a sticky thread discussion as outlined in the Terms of Use agreement, section 1.

If you have concerns about the changes, we expect you to take the following actions:

Rate Comments: If you find someone being annoying in the comments, rate his or her posts negatively.

Make It Private: If you have a problem with someone annoying you in your blog, set your profile to private.

Don't Feed the Trolls: If you have a problem with someone in the forums annoying you, simply ignore what he or she has to say. People who troll or flame want your attention. Lack of attention is your only solution to the problem.

Abusing Reviews? If someone is not writing a review about the game, it should be reported. Anyone caught writing reviews about critics rather than the game has reviews subject for removal and possibly a moderation.

Harassment in the ToU is Not Trolling or Flaming. If you believe you are at risk of being physically harmed or personally affected by such actions as hacking, tampering of personal information, and the like, contact customer support immediately.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

    Shadowgun User Review

This week we take a look at Shadowgun for the iOS.

"Madfinger Games, with the help Unity, have created a really great third-person shooter that focuses on cover mechanics and set-piece battles. Though most of these battles will take place in corridors or internal areas, they're never restrictive and there is usually more than one way to approach the situation. It is a treat to see such excellent level design on a game made for mobile devices.

Shadowgun's greatest strengths are its control scheme and striking good looks. The developers managed to nail button-less cover, a brave design decision when creating a game where cover is as important as in other similar shooters such as Gears of War. Simply by approaching cover, the on-screen character will slide into place and be firmly cemented until the player pulls straight back on the floating virtual stick.

I never experienced any real pains or frustrations with the scheme. If I had to nitpick about anything, it would be that not all objects you find will be objects your character can use to take cover. However, before you make it half way through the first of the eight levels, you'll have a good understanding of what constitutes potential cover and what doesn't.

Shadowgun looks so good on the iPhone's screen that you may find yourself stopping to take in the scenery on more than one occasion. The lack of jagged edges would be enough to make even the high-end PC gamer jealous, lest they be equipped with the latest in graphical hardware. Textures appear detailed, edges are round and smooth, and the effects, while a bit unorthodox, are enough to make you feel the intensity of the battle.

For all its beauty, one of Shadowgun's greatest failing is in the utter lack of variety. It's a shame that the graphical fidelity isn't highlighted further by the addition of more outdoor scenarios, a larger cast of enemy combatants, or more than one basic location. I'm sad to report that I began feeling a sense of deja vu through a few sections, as if I'd already been there and fought through this corridor before. Every time I thought we were going to have a real change of scenery, the game pulls you back to a place all too familiar.

The other problem, while not as critical as the former, is the story. Not only is it disjointed, but it borrows heavily from other games (something that becomes quite clear after defeating the final boss). While the concept of borrowing heavily from some of the more successful console and PC titles isn't new, it's still a little disappointing. Mobile gaming is a new frontier, so developers should be doing what they can to treat it as such.

Without a doubt Shadowgun's strengths greatly outweigh its weaknesses. The controls are tight and appropriate, it looks simply fantastic, and what it lacks in variety it makes up for in gameplay and excellent pacing. Even though the negatives may appear to some to be deal breakers, it is without question that the game is truly a good time. That's what is most important." - musicalmac

Did you know that things were changing on GameSpot? No? Well, after asking for your opinion on things around the site, there are a few major changes coming to the way things work around the site. However, it is important to make note that the changes have not taken effect as the TOU is still the same. When can you expect to see the changes? Soon, very soon. But it's important to remember that until those changes happen, make sure you still follow the current TOU.
