Pachinko kept Sega Sammy in profit during the final nine months of 2011, despite declines in the company's videogame and arcade businesses.
Total net sales for the nine months ending December 31 came to ¥311.6 billion (£2.58 billion). Net income, or profit, was ¥34.4 billion (£285.5 million), a decline of 6.6 per cent year on year. More than half of revenue came from the company's pachinko business, which also saw operating income increase 23.5 per cent year on year to ¥67.5 billion (£560.5 million).
Things were much worse for the company's videogame division. Net sales fell 4.9 per cent to ¥64.1 billion (£532.3 million), and operating losses were ¥5.5 billion (£45.8 million). This time last year Sega Sammy's consumer business posted an operating profit of ¥2.8 billion.
The company sold 12.6 million games during the period. The star performer was Mario & Sonic At The London 2012 Olympic Games, which sold 2.39 million units in the US and Europe. Sales of Sonic Generations totalled 1.63 million.
