Sony sweetens PS Vita 3G deal

$300 version of new handheld will now include free 8GB memory stick, PSN game, AT&T; 3G data plan access; $350 First Edition preorders to receive just the PSN game and data plan.

Potential PlayStation Vita purchasers have another option to consider, as Sony today announced new incentives to pick up the 3G versions of its hardware bundles.

For a limited time, those who pick up the $300 3G Vita package will receive an upgraded bundle with an 8GB memory card ($30 when sold separately); a 30-day, 250MB AT&T DataConnect Pass ($15 on its own); and a PlayStation Network game. The data plan and PSN game will be provided upon online activation of the system. The standard $300 3G Vita does not include a memory card, which is a required accessory for many of the system's games.

Gamers who pick up the $350 First Edition bundle will also receive a bonus. While they will have to settle for the 4GB memory card already announced as part of that package, Sony will still offer them the DataConnect Pass and PSN game upon activation. The First Edition also includes a limited edition case and a copy of the launch game Little Deviants, not to mention that it goes on sale February 15, a week prior to the Vita's February 22 wide release.

Once activated, the DataConnect Passes for both packages will automatically renew for a $15 fee every 30 days, although users are able to cancel their subscription at any time.

Beyond the 3G bundles, Sony will offer a $250 Wi-Fi-only model of the PS Vita at launch. For more on the system, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

Getting "sweet deals"?, well obviously because of the poor sales. That's what you get when you remove most of the useful features which was available from the PSP.

Why would I pay an extra $50 plus $15 per month, when I can just use wifi or tether from my phone to the vita?

They need to stop with all the stupid options and just have ONE MODEL which has the best of everything. Why not only offer you best than offer something a little less for people to complain about?

I just wish they'd throw in the 8GB memory card with the First Edition bundle and scrap Little Deviants in favor of Rayman Origins. Now that would be a deal.

The price for the PSP VITA is reasonable for people who buy and play video games as their main hobby no matter what gaming platform they prefer. I had been gaming since 1976 and what we gamers(I refuse and still hate the term 'hardcore') should realize is that our HOBBY is EXPENSIVE: yet we can afford our hobby as long as we have a steady income. Price is the reason why I missed the entire N64 and Dreamcast era as a 'struggling' college student. Yet enjoyed the PS1/PS2 era once I graduated and got myself a good paying career.

Please remember that we are still in an economic funk. From the perspective of parents who will 'finance' their child's request for a new 'toy', it will be TOO EXPENSIVE. Parents will always negotiate/reason with their child for an alternative and the closest alternative is the 3DS. Why, because it is the best bang for their buck with its price point, ds compatibility and games. I will buy a PSP Vita on day one just like I bought a PSP on day one. Money has already been set aside for it. As for all the 'struggling' students out there at the mercy of their parents, I hope you have a part-time job and good negotiation skills!

Sweet deal. I think soon after launch the wifi model will be dropped and they will only sell the 3G/wifi model for $250.

The reason the wi-fi model isn't getting the same deal is because it's pre-order numbers aren't as low and it's price isn't as high. This is incentive to get the model Sony wants to be the popular brand instead of the cheaper alternative. This is the explanation for everyone wondering why the cheaper model isn't getting the same treatment. Why reward someone who's getting the cheaper product?

And honestly, people still cry about how expensive new game handhelds are? They've never been cheap, the Gameboy itself was a wallet buster when it was first released. You want it cheaper, wait for the tech to get cheaper. Until then, you're out of luck

I desperately wanted a Vita, and I kind of still do, but I have 2 reservations. They announced you'd have to pay to download the games you already purchased, yet have given no information(that I can find) as to how much. If I paid 40 for a PSP game and you want me to pay 20 to dl a copy of it?...Eff you. Backwards compatibility is important to me. I was promised backwards compatibility when I bought my PS3, so I sold my PS2...then you took the feature away. A small fee would be one thing, but I'm not going to consider 20-30% as a gift. Rather, I will see it as a kick in the junk.

That cards will run up to 100USD. Not only is that an insane amount for what it is, but it's only benefit over the Pro Duo's I already own (For use in my camera/PSP's/PS3) is in DRM. A lot of people bought PSP's for emulation. You don't want that on your device? Fine, but why should I have to pay for it? People will hack it eventually anyways, and I'm stuck with the bill? No thank you. I really would like to get a Vita, but not until Sony makes good on some promises, for once. If I wanted to be lied to, and throw away money I could use elsewhere, I'd call up an ex. There are no pre-order bonuses, anyways. So it looks like I'm waiting to see how Sony "answers" my questions.

3G data plans are the biggest cash cow for these cell companies. 2G for $30 is such a ripoff, I cannot tell you. For ancient infrastructure upgrades, these cell companies took grants from govt. from tax payer money, did minor upgrades to their infrastructure, called it 3G and charged people ridiculous amounts for very tiny data usage allowance. I can download 2G in 2 min on my Verizon Fios at home ($33/month) while it is 2G for a WHOLE month for $30 on cell towers. Ridiculous 3rd world country we live in.

What they couldn't do the same to the WiFi version? I want a WiFi PS Vita bundle ($250 with the free game and memory card included), not a 3G one. Know this Sony, I will never pay $300 on a handheld, bundle or not.

The deal is not sweet enough depending how big the PSVITA DLC becomes and AT&T; is betting accounts go over. What are you downloading from PSN Angry Birds Vita HD? They complain because its' not enough for the network let alone DL games. Wi-Fi is going to be used most of the time and maybe a few 3G bleeps.

  • ragflop

I don't understand why so many complaints about the price point.... people spends upwards 1.2k on cell phones and plans per year. Obviously everyone likes to spend less, but establish some pricing credibility before you start complaining.

At first I really wanted the Vita and was thinking of pre-ordering it but after much thought, I think I'll wait a couple of weeks or maybe even months after the release date to get it. There are so many accessories you have to get for it like the memory that I wouldn't have enough money for the other games I want this year. I'm even thinking about just waiting til they make a slim version or lower the price even though I really want one.

@Sunuva22 actually it is cheaper to max produce the items it helps to keep the cost down which in turns keeps the price down so if they do it your way it would cost more and the prices will be higher

  • shadowhunter0

    Posted Jan 29, 2012 1:49 am GMT

@wiidsduelpack actually that is 2 different things M$ charges for something that is free everywhere else and with AT&T; is pretty much paying for the internet like you do at home while psn is still free

  • Sunuva22

    Posted Jan 29, 2012 12:28 am GMT

I think they should only produce a limited quantity of the handhelds and have people special order them. They are going to lose too much money like the 3ds overproducing these things. Forgive me if my logic is wrong.

  • wiidsduelpack

    Posted Jan 29, 2012 12:27 am GMT

MS charges a monthly rate of $10 on Live and it renews it each month. Well, it is cheaper on retail. Not cheap AT&T; at all.

It'll be interesting to see how the sales will go compared to the Nintendo 3DS. Really, I don't see many special things about the VITA that convinces me to get it...The 3DS was similar, and yet the price had to drastically drop in order for people to buy it!
