Bungie was founded as Bungie Software Products Corporation in Chicago in May 1991 by Alex Seropian, who was joined soon after by Jason Jones, who still leads the company today. Bungie became renowned as one of Mac gaming's leading developers, creating the Marathon FPS series and Myth strategy games. Microsoft acquired Bungie in 2000, moving the studio to its Redmond headquarters in Washington, in order for it to develop Xbox's breakout launch game, Halo: Combat Evolved.

After Halo's considerable success, Bungie exclusively produced Halo sequels for Xbox and Xbox 360 - Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo: ODST and Halo: Reach - growing in size that lead the studio into moving into its own building in Bellevue, near Redmond, after shipping Halo 2. In October 2007, Bungie announced that it was splitting from Microsoft and becoming an independent studio, and in April 2010, it announced that it was entering into a ten-year publishing agreement with Activision. With the Halo licence owned by Microsoft, Bungie's forthcoming games will be new IP for multiple platforms.
