Craving Cookies?

Imitate the Girl Scouts - make your own!

As previous discussions on this site have proven, Girl Scout cookies are a controversial issue.

But I think there are a couple things we can all agree on: Girl Scout cookies, however delicious, are pretty expensive on a per-cookie basis. They’re also not available year-round.

A couple years ago, poking around food blogs on the Internet (as you do) I discovered a wonderful solution to this problem: you can make your own!

I have since become a devotee of Samoa Bars, and I have to say - I actually prefer them, by far, to the Samoas that come in a box. So delicious! And you can make them, in your own kitchen, whenever you wish.

(Oh, a note on that - the recipe calls for melting store-bought caramels, but one time my sister made a batch of caramel that turned out too sticky, so we used it in cookies instead. The cookies were even more delicious than usual. So if you like to make candy and know how to make caramel, you can kick the homemade Samoas up an extra notch!)

This particular food blog, Baking Bites, has recipes for Samoa Bars and regular Samoas (identical to the bars, except with rolling and cutting), Thin Mints, Tagalongs, Do-si-dos, and an apparently discontinued cookie called a Lemon Cooler.

Get to baking! We have almost a full month before Lent starts, so now is the time to indulge!

Note: As I was writing this post, I remembered/discovered that I already wrote it, almost two years ago. Oops! I hope the information is new to some of you!

My favorite GS cookies are Thin Mints. But, obviously I cant get them year round. But thats ok. I buy Mint Thins at Dollar General. At 1.65 a box I don’t feel like Im getting ripped off and I can get them anytime of year. Those Girl Scouts are husslin’ us:D

These aren’t GS cookies…but I thought this might be a fun recipe to try anyhow.  We just bought a box at the local Middle Eastern market.  For those of you who have children who are fans of C.S. Lewis’ “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” from his Chronicles of Narnia…Turkish Delight:

:o)

We make thin mints by dipping ritz crackers in melted chocolate, to which we have added a couple drops of mint oil. Yum. Will have to check out the other recipes-thanks!

We do this, too!

That sounds good:)

Can’t wait to try this recipe.

Oh, yummy. Samoas are my favorite.  I am eager to try this recipe.  Thanks for this post, Arwen!

My favorites are the peanut butter sandwiches.  If they were available year around, then I might consider buying them.  I remember back in the day (and I’m talking 1970 now), they were only a dollar a box.

These recipes sound so yummy. But at this point in my life I’m quite a lazy baker. I hope when my kids are a bit older and can help more I’ll be more inclined to try these. In the meantime I’ve discovered Keebler actually makes excellent knockoffs of most GS cookies and they are available year round and sometimes even on a bogo sale - at least in my local store. Knowing I can get them year round certainly helps me resist buying them on impulse in front of the store.

Thanks for the recipes, I’m going to put them on my list to try!

These are great!  They’ll be perfect to have on hand for summertime when the freezer supply of “real” Samoas has run out….no matter how many boxes I buy, my husband always manages to get through them before the next cookie season.
