It can be discouraging at times. Just the other day there was an article in the online version of our local paper. It was talking about our Governor (Texas) who is fast-tracking the requirement that women have sonograms and listen to the heartbeat of their baby before they have an abortion. Some person made a comment to the article saying that they’d be happy to look at a sonogram picture, then they would look squarely at the doctor and say “kill it.” I still want to cry thinking some people can be so horribly cruel. But then I remember this is why we are fighting so hard.
Lift It High

This is a meaningful time of year for pro-lifers. The anniversary of Roe v. Wade on Saturday, and the national March for Life in DC today - I’ve been thinking about and praying for the fight against abortion even more than usual this weekend. I’m sure we all have.
The pro-life quest can sometimes be discouraging, but I think it’s important to hope in the truth: that by his cross Christ has already conquered death, and that he himself is the champion of the fight for the unborn.
In that vein, we sang “Lift High the Cross” at Mass yesterday, and later I went looking for the original lyrics. I couldn’t verify, but this version at Oremus Hymnal (warning - link plays music) seems good. I actually shivered when I read it, thinking of how “Satan’s legions” must tremble when they see us embracing Christ’s cross and all it symbolizes.
Keep fighting the good fight!
Lift High the Cross
Refrain:
Lift high the cross,
the love of Christ proclaim
till all the world adore
his sacred Name.
1. Come, brethren, follow where our Captain trod,
our King victorious, Christ the Son of God.
(refrain)
2. Led on their way by this triumphant sign,
the hosts of God in conquering ranks combine.
(refrain)
3. Each newborn soldier of the Crucified
bears on the brow the seal of him who died.
(refrain)
4. This is the sign which Satan’s legions fear
and angels veil their faces to rever.
(refrain)
5. Saved by this Cross whereon their Lord was slain,
the sons of Adam their lost home regain.
(refrain)
6. From north and south, from east and west they raise
in growing unison their songs of praise.
(refrain)
7. O Lord, once lifted on the glorious tree,
as thou hast promised, draw the world to thee.
(refrain)
8. Let every race and every language tell
of him who saves our souls from death and hell.
(refrain)
9. From farthest regions let their homage bring,
and on his Cross adore their Savior King.
(refrain)
10. Set up thy throne, that earth’s despair may cease
beneath the shadow of its healing peace.
(refrain)
11. For thy blest Cross which doth for all atone
creation’s praises rise before thy throne.
(George Kitchin, 1887)

Thanks for this, Arwen. The song gives me chills, too, especially verse #3. I’ve been feeling distraught this past week in light of the story from Philadelphia and the Roe anniversary—just want to cry at the monstrous nature of this evil. I just keep loving on my five-month-old and praying :(
