By Leeroy Wilfred Kabs-Kanu :
There is no doubt that Sierra Leoneans have developed a renewed interest in their country. The frenzy with which Sierra Leoneans are organizing activities to commemorate the 50th Independence Anniversary Celebrations show that interest in the nation has been ignited with a patri0tic fervour that has not been seen before in Sierra Leone. What has revived the interest, dreams and the hopes of the Sierra Leonean people ? The answer is simple : President Ernest Koroma’s inspiring leadership and his many achievements which are changing the face of the nation.
Only a decade ago, Sierra Leoneans in the diaspora especially would not give a rat’s tail about what was going on in their country. As far as they were concerned, their country had become a failed state and a doomed nation and they lost interest completely in their motherland. Just as nobody cared about the country, so nobody cared when Independence anniversaries and other national celebrations came .Most people did not even know where their Embassy in Washington DC or their Mission to the UN were located. As for the ambassadors and diplomats, who cared for a bowl of dead fish ? Today, it has all changed. Sierra Leoneans in the diaspora are so interested in their country that the Embassy and the Mission are always seething with citizens and the telephones of the diplomats ring off the hook. The names and identities of the ambassadors and diplomats are now household words. This is because President Koroma has renewed hope in Sierra Leoneans. Everybody now wants to identify with their nation.
The President’s electrification program and completion of the Bumbuna Hydroelectricity Project which have illuminated a nation once thought to be the darkest in the world; his infrastructural developments which have resulted in modern highways crisscrossing the length and breadth of the country; his agricultural reforms which are bringing Sierra Leone closer to attaining food security; his improvement of health care delivery and revival of mining activities in the country, among other achievements, have all breathed new hope in Sierra Leoneans and fired their spirits of nationalism and patriotism once again. The result is that everybody wants to stage the best Independence Anniversary celebrations. They are so proud of their nation now. Even John Benjamin, J.J.Saffa, Sama Banya and the SLPP journalists secretly make high-fives in their corners.
We hope this new optimism will be transformed into productive plans for the nation. This is no longer the time to rest on one’s oars . This is no longer the time to be armchair critics like Victor Sylver of the Sierra Herald, a once admirable BBC Stringer who has sold his conscience and moral being for a mesh of SLPP pottage. This is no longer the time to be destructive citizens plotting the downfall of the nation. This is the time for everybody to arise in the supreme interest of the nation to put their shoulders behind the wheel and help President Koroma continue his positive transformation of our nation from a failed state to a strong , wealthy and progressive nation. Do not allow yourselves to be fooled by dissident propaganda. Sierra Leone is heading for a progressive and productive direction under President Ernest Bai Koroma, the best reform-minded and hands-on President we have ever had in the department of socio-economic and political developments.
LEAD, FOLLOW OR STAY BEHIND. Sierra Leone is heading back for her old glory and you do not want to be left behind by the progress train . Throwing our weight behind President Koroma is the best way we can make productive use of the new feelings of love and patriotism the President has ignited in everyone of us. It is all not rosy all the way, but as a people we can overcome .The foundation for progress has been laid by President Koroma’s outstanding leadership. It is time now for all Sierra Leoneans to heed the times. It is now or never. This is our finest moment. We must all jump aboard to help the President . We dare not tarry if we love our nation with our whole hearts, for progress we must . Our old glory we must seize back.
