Consensus around Flak's virtual film desk this year was that the Oscars got it mostly right, nominating some of the creamiest movies in the crop. But Flak's annual also-ran film awards, the Steak Knives, aren't so much about the cream as the half-and-half — the accomplishments in the film world that didn't rank at the top of anyone's charts but that deserve acknowledgement as this weekend's Oscar ceremony put the official cap on reflections on the 2007 movie year. We struck from our consideration any nominatee for an Academy Award, Golden Globe or Independent Spirit Award, as well as the top five in each category from the Indiewire Critics' Poll (see the ineligibles) in order to arrive at our second-bests of the year.
