A Shau was one of several U.S. Special Forces camps located near the Laotian border in I Corps to keep watch on infiltration of enemy units into South Vietnam from the North.
On March 9-10, 1966, Maj. Bernie Fisher flew several Close Air Support missions in support of the besieged U.S. Special Forces, Vietnamese irregulars and Chinese Nung troops on the ground. Maj. Fisher was awarded the Medal of Honor for his unconventional and daring rescue of a fellow A-1 Skyraider pilot downed by enemy ground fire.
