New Resident Evil 6 Details Revealed at Anniversary Event
Third main character, mysterious enemy, and massive scale.
Capcom closed off today's Resident Evil Anniversary Premier Party event with a full stage devoted to the just announced Resident Evil 6. Executive producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi, producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi and director Eiichiro Sasaki took the stage to share additional details beyond what had been shown in the trailer from earlier in the day.
The three shared similar sentiments in their opening comments. Noting that they've been working on the project in secret for years, they said they were glad to be able to announce it today.
RE6 has the largest staff count in series history, said Hirabayashi. He gave a specific figure of around 150 people, but noted that when you add in overseas staff and other contributing parties, it comes to over 600.
Kobayashi said that the game is being made to be the "ultimate horror entertainment." He mentioned two key concepts:
- The fear that lies ahead (like maybe something will jump out at you when you turn the corner, and so-forth)
- Everything is overwhelming -- the scale, the story, the feeling of being there.
Kobayashi also noted that zombies have finally returned to the series with RE6. Without going into details, he said that there are many secrets surrounding the game's zombies.
Zombies aren't the only enemies in the game. Kobayashi also shared a pic of the game's "Javo" creature, but did not provide details. He teased that it is a shocking existence that has even greater impact that the zombies.
Regarding the game's story and characters, Kobayashi mentioned the ability to play as Leon and Chris. These two were announced earlier in the day.
Kobayashi also revealed that the game has a third main character, another male lead. While Kobayashi would not share the character's name, he did share an image. The third main character is described as "the man who's told to save the world."
The game's story begins in America. As detailed earlier, the President is about to make an official statement about bioterror and the Raccoon City incident, when he himself becomes transformed into a zombie following a bioterror attack.
Leon is at the President's side when the bioterror attack occurs. He and a girl named Helena Harper end up traveling together. Helena had been on security detail for the president.
Meanwhile, Chris is working some bioterror case in China. His and Leon's stories will progress simultaneously. The China side will take place primarily in one particular city.
The Resident Evil 6 stage came after a lengthy Anniversary Stage that covered other games and product in the series. This stage began with nostalgic footage showing off all the past RE games, from the numbered titles to the offshoots.
Kobayashi and producer Masachiko Kawata took the stage to introduce Resident Evil Revelations, debuting a new story heavy trailer that will be posted to the game's official site later.
Following a live demonstration of Raid Mode by the game's director and assistant producer, Kawata revealed one bit of new Revelations info: Raid Mode has four unlockable rare weapons.
Attendees at the event were able to sample a Revelations demo ahead of the game's release next week.
Two other Resident Evil games followed Resurrection's segment. First Raccoon City, which Capcom hasn't been hyping in Japan as much as it has in the rest of the world. Following a trailer and a brief introduction to Raccoon City from Kobayashi, Resident Evil Chronicles HD Selection resurfaced. The PS3 pairing of Umbrella Chronicles and Darkside Chronicles saw a trailer, but still has a vague 2012 release time frame.
Next came the latest in related Resident Evil product. Kobayashi detailed a weekly manga, Resident Evil themed sunglasses from Recs, Resident Evil apparel, and other goods. He also mentioned the opening of the Resident Evil YouTube channel an Facebook and Mixi pages, which we covered earlier.
Closing off the anniversary stage, Kobayashi promised a variety of additional developments leading up to March.
