In other parts of the world, the eShop download was given out as a freebie with registration of two qualifying 3DS games on Club Nintendo, and then offered separately for sale later.
Now that the media embargo has lifted, we can rush to our keyboards and breathlessly confirm the presence of space pirates (see: interstellar buccaneers; star-sea swashbucklers) in Kid Icarus: Uprising. Look for more in our hands-on preview later today.
In WiiWare news, remember when Interplay was going to revive Stonekeep for WiiWare? Well, that's happened. You can see the results above.
Next week, on January 26, Sega will follow with a demo of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, allowing you to satisfy your curiosity about the mascot minigame collection without anyone else ever knowing. Upcoming demos coming at unspecified dates include Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D and Rayman Origins.
"Wuhu Island" may sound like an innocuous place, but it's apparently rife with dirty, dirty cheaters. And that cheating doesn't sound like it's stopping anytime soon, with Nintendo telling StickTwiddlers that the island's "Maka Wuhu" track in Mario Kart 7 won't be patched or updated to fix the glaring glitch found at the start.
"We are aware that it is possible to navigate a certain part of the track in Wuhu Island in a way that allows a large part of the course to be bypassed," Nintendo rep Buddy Roemer (no, not that Buddy Roemer) told the site. And though Nintendo acknowledges the glitch, Roemer said there "are no plans to update the game to remove this shortcut." Not for the moment, at least.
The logic behind not updating the game is perhaps even more bizarre than acknowledging the glitch and refusing to fix it. "Doing so would create an unfair advantage for the users of the original release of the game," Roemer said, though he did also say the request for a fix has "been added to our records for Mario Kart 7." We imagine a printout of the email is now sitting in an official three-ring binder somewhere, biding its time next to fan art of Yoshi with a glider.
In Spirit Camera, co-developed by Nintendo and Tecmo, players will use the 3DS as a virtual camera with which to help "Maya," a girl trapped in a creepy house. The game includes a 16-page "AR Book," which uses augmented reality to display movies and other special effects at certain points in the story. "In other moments," the announcement reads, "characters will emerge from the pages into the player's world via augmented reality in the form of evil spirits that attack from all directions." That's pretty scary for a paper insert!
The 2.0 update for Super Mario Bros. Crossover, coming in Q1 2012, gives the homemade blend-em-up a bit more flash and a wider spectrum of nostalgia. And the new SNES and Gameboy visuals don't detract from the game's real purpose, which is to destroy that aloof minion Lakitu in new and interesting ways.
The top two spots in Japan's 2011 list of best-selling games are taken by a pair of Nintendo 3DS games: Mario Kart 7, with more than 1.6 million sold, and Super Mario 3D Land with more than 1.08 million sold. In third is Capcom's Monster Hunter Tri-G for 3DS, followed by 27 more titles for 3DS, DS PSP, Wii and PS3. These include From Software's Dark Souls and Square Enix's Final Fantasy XIII-2.
