The
"Enola Gay" aft fuselage. The holes in the aft bomb bay pressure
bulkhead are the pressurized tunnel opening leading to the flight
deck (top) and the hatch into the bomb bay (center). This picture
shows the aft fuselage after polishing.
May, 1999 This
photo was taken before polishing of the exterior was completed
in summer, 1999. Note the propeller against the wall. This is
one of the four propellers from the B-29. It is 16' 8" in diameter.

The only guns
mounted on the B-29s of the 509th Composite Group--the unit formed
specifically to drop the special weapons--were the two .50 cal.
machine guns in the aft turret. The gunner sat in the enclosed area
above. The 20 mm cannon mounted on some B-29s was deleted on these
aircraft.
