Non-Chick Flicks

A few of my recent favorites

As long as the girls are talking entertainment today, I thought I’d share my “take” on a few of the films I had the chance to watch on my Christmas vacation this year. But you’ll note a trend here—none of these are “chick flicks”. Maybe that’s because I hung out with three “guys” all during the holiday season and I never get to choose the movie in that situation! Please note that all of these are... READ MORE

"I've Added A Bit of A Limp This Time"

Rachel, thank you for having the courage to admit being hooked on Downton Abbey, which was a guilty pleasure for me last year, and will be again this season.

Can’t resist sharing this parody of season 1.

Fellowship of the Angels

At just the moment we begin harking to the herald angels, Mike Aquilina has released a delightful volume of daily meditations on them.

Handsomely bound, with a faux leather cover and a ribbon to keep your place, the book offers a simple daily reading about the angels from the Church Fathers, followed by suggested colloquies to make with God and with the angels.

In his introduction to the work, Aquilina... READ MORE

Mass Confusion

An awesome new show for Catholic families!

This year on Thanksgiving, CatholicTV pioneered a new form of entertainment for our families—the Catholic sitcom! Mass Confusion stars Greg and Jennifer Willits and Mac and Katherine Barron, who come together for a project that is hilarious, family friendly and—frankly—a great departure from what normally fills the airwaves these days. I encourage you to take thirty minutes, put your feet up and enjoy... READ MORE

A Murmuration of Starlings

something beautiful for the weekend

Don’t tell me these birds are not dancing!

Murmuration from Sophie Windsor Clive on Vimeo.

Matthew 10:29:

Are not two sparrows sold for a small coin? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father’s knowledge. Even all the hairs of your head are counted. So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

With a polite nod to ninme.

Morality For Beautiful Girls

Do you read the #1 Ladies' Detective Agency series?

#1 Ladies’ Detective Agency sounds like precisely the opposite of anything I’d want to read.

“Miss Marple for Botswana?” No thanks, no matter how big an international best-seller.

Early this summer, however, a good friend wore down my resistance, and I’m so glad!

It’s not a pert little series of murders solved, but a charming and deeply evocative collection of tales about the solitary burdens we humans... READ MORE

Cleaner Heads

with a great product for parents of babies

Blaise was hospitalized with respiratory illness as a newborn. When he got stuffed up, a nurse would bring in a tube and hook it to the vacuum port on the wall, then efficiently suck all the, uh, stuff right out of his head. I watched and wished we had something similar at home. The standard bulb syringes are nearly useless.

We struggled through the colds of Blaise’s babyhood with the bulb syringe... READ MORE

How to Love

a pro-life, pro-marriage message from a surprising source

The following video is inappropriate for kids, but I hope you’ll take a look at it.

It’s not from an artist or genre ordinarily to my taste, but I watched after reading about it at Dr. Alveda King’s blog. I’m impressed and heartened, and think you will be too.
