Moving Stuff Around

Do you like to rearrange?

This past weekend, Greg and I were busy around the house doing a three room shuffle that resulted in me getting a new home office for the new year.  I wish I had a “before” picture of my old space to show you how bad things had gotten in that room before the big move!  This photo is of my new space before we began to move the “stuff” in to the room.  It’s likely that within a month, I’ll have the same old stacks of books and papers lining my desk that drove me crazy in my old room.

I realize that having a space of my own is an incredible luxury - and this new work space is full of light, a window that looks over the front yard, a higher ceiling, and just a great “vibe” in general.  I am slowly moving in, trying to be “intentional” about the placement of every item so that it makes sense for my workflow.  This is also a wonderful opportunity to organize and to discard items that don’t benefit the work I’m doing or are no longer current (i.e. Windows for Dummies books!).

Here’s a secret - I LOVE moving around furniture.  Greg and I still have most of the same furniture that filled our old house and rarely buy new pieces.  What we do love though is rearranging things - frequently entire rooms!  My girlfriends tease me whenever they come over, asking for a “tour” to see what’s landed where every time they visit.  There is something about moving furniture that rejuvenates me and makes me feel energized.  A chair pointed in a different direction can give you a whole new perspective on the world!

Do you have any suggestions for good organization systems for my new office?  I still need to hang photos and bring in lots of my books, but it’s already beginning to look “lived in”. Do you like to move furniture or rearrange rooms?  What was the last room “makeover” you undertook?

I don’t do a lot of major rearranging because my house is really small and some of the rooms are somewhat rigid in terms of furniture placement (due to limited wallspace, lots of windows, etc).  But with a baby in the house, we are constantly doing minor rearranging as he outgrows equipment from one stage to the next.  This keeps things interesting.

Hi Lisa,
I’m with you - I LOVE moving furniture around in our house.  Unfortunately my husband doesn’t share this love and rolls his eyes every time I suggest changing something up.  I’ve learned though that it’s not so much the changes that he doesn’t like, it’s the physically moving heavy objects around that are perfectly useful where they are.  So I’ve taken to moving them by myself when he’s not around to stop me.  Last time I rearranged the living room, he was on a business trip on another continent!

Gail - that must have been a nice surprise for him!  My husband is a real trooper, and actually kind of likes it too - I think because it forces me to clean!

I would rather rearrange/reorganize than do anything.  With 2 adults, 2 toddlers, 1 cat, and a baby on the way all living in 950 sq ft, I’m constantly seeking more efficient ways of keeping our stuff.

We have rearranged our bedroom a few times which makes it feel like a brand new space.  But my husband in notorious for rearranging the living room.  Many-a-times I have gone to Mass or shopping solo and come home to a vacuumed rearranged living room.  He pretty much rearranges it every time he vacuums for me.  Its fun and creates a new space each time.

I like the aftermath of moving things around and getting a fresh start in a room- but sometimes the actually doing it overwhelms me. Thereby….I usually find an arrangement I like the first time around and it stays that way for a long time. I suppose if I actually owned my own place and had nice furniture to work with I’d be more inclined. :D
