Cleaner Heads

with a great product for parents of babies

Blaise was hospitalized with respiratory illness as a newborn. When he got stuffed up, a nurse would bring in a tube and hook it to the vacuum port on the wall, then efficiently suck all the, uh, stuff right out of his head. I watched and wished we had something similar at home. The standard bulb syringes are nearly useless.

We struggled through the colds of Blaise’s babyhood with the bulb syringe and (lots of) saline solution, but this time I’ve found something different. Thanks to my network of moms on the Internet I learned about the Nosefrida, aptly if somewhat grossly nicknamed “the snotsucker.”

My impression of “the snotsucker”: wow, does it ever!  This thing is amazingly effective. You don’t really want more detail than that, but let’s just say it does its job and then some. And as a nice perk for this mom of twins, its design makes it easy to clean, thus simple to use for more than one baby.

We took the babies to the doctor with a cold last week. He asked if we were cleaning out their noses, and as I told him about the Nosefrida, he laughed and showed us the website is bookmarked on his computer. “It’s awesome that you already have one!”

Now that’s a doctor recommendation if I’ve ever heard one. Bye bye, bulb syringes - I’m never going back.

That sounds awesome!  I might even consider getting it for my three-year old, who has not yet mastered the art of blowing his nose.

I am glad to read another good review!  This is already on my wish-list for a Christmas stocking stuffer… but maybe I should just buy it before then.  Baby #2 comes in a few weeks & if it’s really that much better than the bulb aspirators, I don’t see a reason to wait two more months to have one on hand!

Good to know! I find the “booger ball” (bulb syringe) to be completely ineffective.

We used something very similar with our 7th.  So wish I had had it for the others.  It was soooo easy!

That sounds wonderful!  Really, those blue bulb syringes ought to be just single use because they just cannot be properly cleaned.  I had a couple hanging around because the kids like to play with them.  Out of curiosity, I cut one open…..YUUUUUUCK!  Bad, black, disgusting ick growing all over the inside.  Into the garbage - yucky!

Thanks for posting Arwen!  My second was hospitalized for a virus at 3 weeks old and we were amazed at the hospital’s nose-sucker.  It was so impressive how effective it was and limited the need for continually trying to clear his nose which just caused extra irritation for the poor thing who was breathing through a respirator at the time.

Just yesterday I was talking to some doctors at the hospital (where I work) about it.  Hopefully baby #3 won’t have the same struggles, but I will definitely keep this product in mind.

Arwen, I was totally going to post about this next week after I saw your tweets! My husband bought this for Henry and it is so amazing. Paul remembers having something like this as a kid in Mexico—cool stuff not sold at large in the US.

I bought one of these last year when my son was born and I LOVE IT.  I recommend it to everyone I know.  It is going to become my go to gift for new moms.

My 11-week-old came down with her first cold about five minutes after I read your post yesterday, and we had a miserable night armed only with the bulb syringe (which made her scream). I bought the Nosefrida today and so far it’s working great, and doesn’t make my daughter cry at all (I think she actually laughed!) Here’s hoping for a better night for both of us—thanks!

I bought this last winter in desperation and have to say I wouldn’t buy it again….I thought I was going to love it but it wasn’t all that great and when ever I used it I would start gagging. I am not easily grossed out but I gag whenever I have to blow up balloons or air mattresses, etc and something about this was like that. If that makes sense.

We bought one about one year ago and LOVE it!  We would never go back to the bulb syringe.

Okay after reading about this there does seem to be a yuck factor as I noticed the removal method involves sucking on the tube… Nevertheless, I ordered one and if needed will give it a try. I have really liked hearing about new items to help with family life. Someone once posted about Sock Sacks. I ordered those as well and what a huge improvement on laundry day! I would really love to see a feature here on F&F that reviews gadgets or strategies for family life with lots of little ones. I have learned a lot!

I just added this to my Amazon baby registry the other day.  I’m glad to have a review from you because I also HATE the bulb syringe (which never quite works anyway) and I wasn’t so sure about this choice either.  Hopefully this will work better for our family too!

Dude, I love Nosefrida. LOVE.

When we were in the hospital with Charlotte, one of the mean nurses was all, “DO NOT REMOVE THIS BULB SYRINGE FROM HER BASSINET!”

And, I am sure I nodded my head like, “okkkkay.”

To which she retorted, “No. NO. It could and HAS saved a baby’s LIFE.”

Which, I am sure is true but of all the things to oversell in the hospital she picks the bulb syringe?
