New Words on the Way
Posted by Arwen Mosher in Faith on Wednesday, November 09, 2011
Are you counting down? Just 18 days to go!
Until we switch to the new missal translation, that is. It’ll be implemented in American parishes on November 27th, the first Sunday of Advent.
At our parish we’ve already started singing the diocesan-mandated set of new Mass parts in preparation, but it occurred to me this week: we’ve only got two Sundays left to say the English words of the Mass I’ve always... READ MORE
Lent At Your Parish

While I was on the path to conversion, I had a dear friend who kept needling me to “go Anglican” instead.
(Yes, I was the kind of nerd who stayed up late nights debating ecclesiology. You can’t hold it against me, I’ve been baptized since.)
The day of my baptism, one of our mutual friends taunted, “Aren’t you going to congratulate Rebecca?”
My friend, who’d taken a good run at me, responded, “I see... READ MORE
New Gulliver: Just Say N"O"
Posted by Lisa Hendey in Reviews on Tuesday, January 04, 2011
Last week, I broke my own rule and went to see a movie without first consulting the USCCB’s movie review website. The “film” in question was the new Jack Black version of Gulliver’s Travels and the company was my sister-in-law, mother-in-law and second grade nephew. Since I was just along for the ride and wanted to spend more time with my nephew, I opted not to see True Grit with my husband and... READ MORE

Last night, Greg and I had a long conversation about our communication (or lack thereof) with the kid we dropped off at college last week. I was sharing with him that I will miss my conversations with Eric, since the communication we’re getting these days seems to come in quick bits, texts and when he needs something. Greg wisely counseled me to be patient, but most of all not to waste any precious... READ MORE
Natural Family Planning Awareness Week
Posted by Lisa Hendey in Faith on Thursday, July 29, 2010
As you read this, I am attending the National Theology of the Body Congress in Pennsylvania. Tonight, I will have the great honor of moderating a panel with several notable TOB speakers and authors. It feels fitting to be in this place during NFP Awareness Week, when we the commemorate the anniversary of the papal encyclical Humanae Vitae (July 25) which articulates Catholic beliefs about human... Priestly Statistics

A recent study put out by the USCCB finds that 92 percent of men who will be ordained to the priesthood this year held full-time jobs before entering seminary. The study also found that the median age of those being ordained this year is 33, and there are eleven men being ordained who are over the age of 65.
Other interesting facts: 37 percent have a relative who is a priest or religious; over 65... READ MORE
Health Insurance Reform & The Bishops
Posted by Rebecca Teti in News on Monday, March 15, 2010
When a group of “Catholic” hospitals endorsed the health care bill up for a vote this week, it made headlines.
The USCCB, however, while in favor of health insurance reform, strongly opposes the bill.
In a bulletin insert sent to dioceses around the country, the bishops urged Catholics to call their representatives and oppose this bill.
Bishop Loverde of Arlington is calling for days of prayer and fasting against passage of the bill.... READ MORE
