Tiny Little Things

Last night a variety of factors converged in a sleep trainwreck: Linus and Ambrose both awoke every two hours all night long.
Six wakeups each times two babies. Do that piece of math and you’ll understand why I crawled out of bed in a stupor this morning.
But blessedly, I checked my email soon afterward and found a message from a dear aunt whose two boys are now in their twenties. She’d gotten our... READ MORE
If God Rested…

My husband, wonderful man that he is, often says to me, “Why don’t you go take a bath?” Or if it’s the best day of the week (Saturday) he says, “Why don’t you go out by yourself for a couple hours?”
I sometimes tell him no. “I will feel better if I stay here and get more stuff done,” I tell him.
I don’t know why I haven’t learned by now: there is always more “stuff” to get “done.” I rarely stop moving... READ MORE
Fighting Burnout

Yesterday morning my husband sent me out to have breakfast by myself, because… well, because I cried about the laundry. I’m not ashamed to admit it.
My twins are four months old today, and this past third of a year has been the most physically and emotionally taxing of my life. Their premature birth and NICU time made a stressful beginning, and being a stay-at-home mom to two babies plus two older... READ MORE
What to Cook When You're Pressed for Time

After a week of roast chicken, barbecue chicken sandwiches, garlic chicken and pasta, chicken soup and chicken enchiladas — with more of your recipes in the freezer waiting for another time — the kids were looking forward to a promised meatloaf.
After a late appointment with one child’s speech therapist, I was contemplating a very late dinner, when I remembered an old shortcut: plopping the mixture... READ MORE
The Gift of Time to Pray
Posted by Arwen Mosher in Faith on Thursday, July 21, 2011
Whenever I’m in a stressful period (like having newborn twins, hey!) I need to pray. And sadly, all that stress makes it harder than usual to find time to pray.
I often end up feeling stressed or like a failure because I haven’t fit prayer into my day, but it honestly never occurred to me that there’s a simple way I can help myself get the time: ask for it.
Melanie Bettinelli, who blogs at The Wine... READ MORE
Technology-Changing Fun

This morning I had an OB appointment and my husband and I had to bring the kids along.
While we were waiting in the exam room, we handed over our iPod touches to keep Camilla and Blaise amused. They’d already behaved nicely through a 15-minute ultrasound and we didn’t want to test them too hard. They - as usual when they have the iPods - played little games. Camilla “colored” various pictures and... READ MORE
Late Lent
Posted by Arwen Mosher in Family on Tuesday, February 22, 2011
February will be over next week. Am I the only one who keeps getting thrown off by the fact that it’s not Lent yet?
With Easter almost as late as possible, Lent isn’t starting until March 9th this year. Since it almost always starts in February, this feels strange.
This week, I’ve caught myself a couple times feeling vaguely guilty because I’m not remembering to stick to my Lenten resolutions. I... READ MORE
Just You and Me

I’m 22 weeks pregnant, and the twins both kick me all the time now. It’s a constant reminder that in a few months, our lives are going to change drastically.
In preparation, we’re trying to live it up as much as we can. Bryan and I took a getaway weekend in January and plan to do another one as soon as we can. Since Camilla and Blaise can both behave civilly in public right now, we’re trying to take... READ MORE
Holding the Baby

When I was pregnant with Blaise, I thought often about how his birth would mean the end of my one-on-one time with Camilla. Juggling the needs of two children would necessarily change the dynamic around our home, one in which I’d previously paid swift attention to my daughter’s every need and been aware of every change in her life.
I was sure that the gift of a sibling would more than make up for... READ MORE
Christmas Storing

Now that we’re back into Ordinary Time, it’s confession time.
Here’s mine: although December 25th was almost three weeks ago, we STILL have Christmas presents sitting in boxes in our living room.
I know!
I’d love to claim the stress of pregnancy as the reason for my disorganization, but I can’t lie. It’s like this every year. In fact, before we had kids, we were even worse at putting away the gifts.... READ MORE
