New Evangelizers

One of the happiest circumstances of my life was the day I decided to take a road trip to Southern California to attend the “Podcast Expo”. I made the decision on a whim after hearing two of my favorite podcast hosts, Greg and Jennifer Willits (then of The Rosary Army, now of The Catholics Next Door), speaking about the event on their podcast. I swallowed the fear I felt inside and took the road trip... READ MORE
Filling Our Empty Churches

The headline reads, “Archdiocese Turns to Evangelizing,” and reports a new plan for getting Catholics in Boston—only about 16% of whom attend Sunday Mass regularly—back to Church.
I blush to read it.
On the one hand, of course I’m delighted whenever anyone takes up “the new evangelization” in earnest.
What’s “new” about the new evangelization is that its focus is not mission territory in the classic... READ MORE
A Thought For Sunday

From a homily of Pope Benedict’s at a mass organized by the Pontifical Council for Promoting the New Evangelization comes this quotation from St. Augustine:
“If Caesar claims his own image engraved on the coin,” he affirms, “will God not exact from man the divine image sculpted in him?”
Post CNMC Blues Inspire Action

I’m home after four days of travel to this year’s wonderful Catholic New Media Conference and firmly ensconced behind the computer in my home office, trying to sort through and onslaught of email, but more importantly an onslaught of emotions.
After having attended four years of CNMCs, I recognize the symptoms. Sleep deprivation, a slightly weepy feeling that comes from missing my good friends, a... READ MORE
Catholicism: Are You Watching?

Back in May Danielle alerted us to Fr. Robert Barron’s Catholicism Project. It’s here!
I haven’t been home to see the first installments on public television, but some friends were telling me last night that it’s blockbuster: stunningly gorgeous, and not didactic or preachy.
If you haven’t caught the buzz, here are a few links which describe what people are excited about, and how parishes and prayer... READ MORE
Lighting The Little Lights

He’s not just the Pope, he’s the bishop of Rome.
Like other bishops, he visits his parishes. On Gaudete Sunday he visited St. Maximilian Kolbe parish, and delivered a lovely homily on the potential of parish life.
Apparently the parish has a large immigrant community, and the Pope had some remarks about communion that are relevant to any parish where multiple ethnic groups are present.
Your community... READ MORE

If you’ve spent any time online in Catholic circles today, it’s likely that you heard the big, historic news about the election of Archbishop Timothy Dolan to the post of President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. NC Register superhero Tim Drake has the story here, but if you really want the moment by moment scoop be sure to follow Tim on Twitter.
Archbishop Dolan’s election... READ MORE
Court of the Gentiles

Pope Benedict XVI has long had the re-evangelization of the West on his heart.
Just before he and the rest of the Vatican went on vacation, two major initiatives toward this end were announced.
First, there is now a Pontifical Council for Evangelization (here’s a column of mine with more on that) dedicated to renewing faith in places where the Gospel has already been preached, but the sense of God... READ MORE
Catholic Radio Comes To DC
Posted by Rebecca Teti in News on Wednesday, May 05, 2010
Catholic Radio launches today in the DC area at 1160 AM, WMET.
I’m not sure why it should, but it pleases me that the effort is being launched by two Texan brothers.
Gives me a clean-up at the corral image, I guess, although the brothers in question are businessmen, not a posse.
