Saying Thank You

Don't be shy!

I saw this commercial today and I was inspired.

My dad, whose own father was in the military, never misses an opportunity to thank anyone he sees in uniform. I am oftentimes not so brave. But after watching this commercial, I decided I don’t want to miss the chance anymore.

Today I was out having lunch with my kids and when an Army soldier walked past us, I quickly (before I could chicken out!) told... READ MORE

Soldier's Mom

Supporting our military families

This past weekend, in various social situations and at Mass, I learned that three of my oldest son’s classmates will soon be leaving college and enlisting in the military. Two are destined for the Air Force, and the third will join the Army. I received the news from two of the moms, both of whom are friends of mine.

What struck me as I spoke with both of them independently was the emotions they were... READ MORE

For Those Who Gave All

Memorial Day Prayer

Whatever your family’s plans for this Memorial Day, please remember to pause and say a prayer for those brave men and women who have given their lives in defense of our nation.

In particular, let us pray for the over 5,400 service members who have been killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace.
Amen.

Hometown Goodness

Why I Love the Memorial Day Parade

On our designated parade-watching spot, we spread out our blankets and wait for the parade to come. Aunt Karen hands out fun snacks and chocolate goodness to keep the kids... READ MORE

Remembering Those Who Gave All

a prayer for Memorial Day

Whatever your family’s plans for this Memorial Day, please remember to pause and say a prayer for those brave men and women who have given their lives in defense of our nation.

In particular, let us pray for the almost 400 service members who have been killed in Iraq and Afghanistan since last Memorial Day.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace.
Amen.

Modern Solutions to Distance

Technology makes keeping in touch easier

Yesterday, in honor of Veterans’ Day, I said some extra prayers for both my grandfathers, who served our country during World War II, and for my father, who did four years in the Coast Guard as a young man.

I also prayed for my brother, who qualifies as not-yet-a-vet, because he is currently serving in the Coast Guard.  We’re very proud of him, and glad that he enjoys his work as an electronic technician. ... READ MORE
