Holy AND Healthy
Posted by Lisa Hendey in Health on Tuesday, January 17, 2012
For all of those who read and chimed in on my recent post about my efforts to get healthier in 2012, it looks like we’re in good company! I enjoyed reading this article in the New York Daily News about the efforts Cardinal-designate Archbishop Timothy Dolan is making to lose weight and become more fit. The Archbishop has a few advantages most of us don’t—a medically supervised regimen and a private... READ MORE
Moms Watching Weight?
Posted by Lisa Hendey in Health on Monday, January 09, 2012
With the flip of the calendar and having spent nearly two deep-fried weeks visiting family in the South, I made the decision to finally take some action about my resolve to get healthier by dropping weight. Ten days of jambalaya, Christmas cookies, and no workouts will put you in that frame of mind.
After doing some praying, pondering and research, I decided to try the Weight Watchers online plan.... READ MORE
Take A Walk Before Thanksgiving
Posted by Rebecca Teti in Health on Wednesday, November 23, 2011
I somewhat resent health advice attached to holidays.
Of course eating well and in moderation and regular exercise are habits worth cultivating both for physical health and spiritual and emotional well-being.
But they should be cultivated the rest of the year.
We’re not to fast while the bridegroom is with us. Therefore the bizarre ladies’ magazine urge to greet every feast day not with joy, but with the fear of getting fat I don’t understand.
Rest assured, therefore, that I’m sharing this article on what happens in the body after a big meal because it’s interesting and not to shame you out of your Thanksgiving dinner.
Specifically, it shows that insulin resistance seems to begin in our muscles and that half an hour of walking or other exercise about a half day before a big meal is an enormous aid to the powers of digestion.
In a related story at the same link: the tryptophan in turkey likely has nothing to do with your feeling tired after your big meal.
“You would have to eat the entire 20-pound turkey to get enough tryptophan to induce sleepiness,” [an expert] says.

My Halloween “treat” to myself this year was a trip to my local women’s imaging center for my annual mammogram. I managed to fit it into the month of October, but just barely, and am happy to report that I received a clean bill of health. I don’t know if having had so many treatments and mammos over the past years has dulled my senses, but it even seemed less uncomfortable than past screenings.
But... READ MORE

Aging Gracefully

We’ve all seen the precious video making the rounds this week of the elderly couple who accidentally webcammed themselves…adorable! Their smiling faces reminded me of a blog post I’ve been wanting to write here for a while. In my head, I’ve entitled the post “Managing Menopause”, but I rethought the title here in an attempt not to scare off (or gross out) our male readers and to include anyone who’s... READ MORE
Inducing Labor Day
Posted by Rebecca Teti in Food on Monday, September 05, 2011
It’s labor day, and my thoughts are with a girlfriend who’s a bit overdue and desperate for labor to begin.
She lives in Atlanta, so I had to remind her about the alleged induction powers of Scalini’s eggplant parmesan.
Sounds weird to me, but the restaurant claims to have 300 babies born within 48 hours of their moms eating the dish, so who am I to scoff?
I hope you’ll comment on the oddest labor-inducing trick you ever heard of—or swear by.
Meanwhile, here’s a little feature the Willits did on this bizarre local tradition a couple of years ago.

Today, my sixteen year old Adam has a routine dentist appointment. He’s capable of driving himself to see our awesome family dentist, but for some reason I still feel compelled to accompany him, to sit with him in the waiting room, and to hear the report that “no cavities” mean he’s been brushing and flossing (well, probably not flossing…).
While there, I’m supposed to schedule an appointment for... READ MORE
Is Sunscreen More Dangerous Than the Sun?
Posted by AGroup in Health on Friday, May 27, 2011
I’ve always considered sunscreen a no-brainer but recently I spotted a report circulating on Facebook that gave my mildly paranoid self pause. It turns out not everyone is convinced that sunscreen is a good thing.
The report in question comes from The Environmental Working Group. I’ll just admit up front that I know very little about this group. In general, I have some pretty serious concerns about... READ MORE
Scheduling and Sleep

This week on the Faith & Family Live Cast (click here to listen or click on the player above) Lynn, Danielle and I enjoy a conversation about our summer plans and projects—what we’re planning to do, and what we’re NOT planning to do! What kinds of plans have you made for the summer—camps, classes, or simple cooling off? Do you prefer a scheduled summer for the kids, or do you keep things free flowing... READ MORE
