When the Word Is Clear

So, sometimes it takes me a while. Yesterday, I was drawn to this Bible passage (which begins with Jesus cursing the fig tree) ...
“Have faith in God. Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe... READ MORE
Lessons in Letting Go

So, our eldest daughter got on a plane on Saturday and flew all night. When she landed Sunday morning, she was in Europe. It’s worth noting that I, my friends, am not in Europe. I am at home in the U.S., musing about my range of thoughts and emotions — excited for her, missing her, and wondering how we even got here.
As moms and dads, every fiber of our being tells us that parenthood is about nurturing,... READ MORE
It's Not About Me

I received a one-two punch in my morning reflections today. As the resident control freak in my house, I just love, love, love clarity.
Today’s Magnificat Gospel reflection by Elizabeth Leseur:
“Let us never look for the result of our efforts for others. It is good for us not to know it, for if we did, pride in doing good, the most subtle pride of all, might follow.”
Imitation of Christ (Chapter 47):... READ MORE
Mean Girls and Best Friends
Posted by Danielle Bean in Family on Wednesday, November 17, 2010
Author Kelly Walen caused a stir three years ago with a New York Times female-friend-bashing essay, My Sorority Pledge? I Swore Off Sisterhood. In the essay, Walen describes her experience in a college sorority where she was victimized by a gang of “mean girls” and its long term effects on her ability to maintain female friendships.
In the two decades since, I’ve been a full-time lawyer, a working... READ MORE
The Challenge of Prayer

My friend Fr. Tim sent this along to me this morning. I think it’s very powerful for people wondering when God is going to answer their prayers.
I Will Move The Rock
Once upon a time…there was a man who was sleeping at night in his cabin when suddenly his room filled with light and the Savior appeared. The Lord told the man He had work for him to do, and showed him a large rock in front of his cabin.... READ MORE
On Leaving the Umbrella

Recently I was shopping in a fabric store and left my purse sitting in the cart while I examined fabric fifteen feet away. It was within eyesight the whole time, but still, a woman warned me to be careful: she’d had hers stolen that way.
I smiled and thanked her, but internally I rolled my eyes. Fabric store clientele seems to consist mainly of elderly ladies and women with children under age two.... READ MORE
Nurturing Faith When You're On Your Own

Q: What do you think about faith-parenting alone?
A: The resonance that this question has had with our readers (Lisa received a slew of heartfelt responses) reflects the reality that we are in a post-Christian culture.
In the early centuries of the Church, while the culture of the Roman Empire was still pagan, people became Christians individually, instead of being brought up in a Christian family.... READ MORE
Coming Up for Air
Posted by Danielle Bean in Faith on Wednesday, May 26, 2010
Ever feel like you’re just treading water? Or (worse) that you’re sinking below the surface?
I woke up yesterday morning gasping for air.
I couldn’t pinpoint my problem exactly, but off the top of my head I could tell you that I was away last weekend, we’re finishing up our school year, we’re transitioning into summer activities, we’re going full-force (at least 2 games a day) with baseball, we’re... READ MORE
Fear, Faith, and Flu Shots
Posted by Danielle Bean in Health on Monday, October 26, 2009
Last week, when I updated my facebook status with a simple “Flu shot today, I hope” I was a bit surprised to be deluged with people telling me not to get one.
I shouldn’t have been.
I know how many people feel about vaccines and I know many of the stories that circulate this time of year. You can find someone to tell you pretty much any bad thing about the flu shot—from it actually making you more... READ MORE
Letting Go

A few weeks ago I came across a beautiful quote by way of a lovely blog that has stayed with me:
You should remember all your life that one of the principal causes of the small progress made by certain good people is that the devil continually fills their souls with disquiet, perplexities, and troubles which render them incapable of application of virtue. The great principle of the interior life lies... READ MORE
