Carols for Christmas

An old songbook becomes part of a family tradition

When I was growing up we had the tradition of waiting until Christmas Eve to put up our tree.

After the tree was decorated (and the tinsel was blown onto the tree ... one strand at a time), we would sing Christmas carols.

Every year we would use these old songbooks from the ‘70s that were distributed as an insert in the local paper.

The back of the songbook has a picture of a paperboy holding up... READ MORE

Come Thou Long Expected Jesus

St. John's College Choir, Cambridge

Just a bit of Advent music to enjoy today! (And here’s a nice Advent YouTube playlist for more where that came from)

Harmonica in Carnegie Hall

Thankful for Small Gifts

There is so much to thank God for, things beyond count, from the sublime and solid facts of our creation and redemption, down to the smallest pleasures of life, like watching a sleeping baby or savoring a cup of tea.

At this particular moment, I am thanking God for the talent of the man in this video, which at once has me gasping in amazement and laughing. Rejoice with me over the fun and the beauty... READ MORE

How Great Thou Art!

A special song for Saturday!

I didn’t catch this when it originally aired, so I was so happy when one of my online friends shared the video of Carrie Underwood with Vince Gill performing one of my favorite devotionals. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Tell Us, Mary Magdalen

a song for the Easter Octave

Spare two minutes for what I think is the most beautiful piece of music ever composed?

This is the Easter Sequence, a hymn almost 1000 years old!

May you praise the Paschal Victim,
immolated for Christians.
The Lamb redeemed the sheep:
Christ, the innocent one,
has reconciled sinners to the Father.
A wonderful duel to behold,
as death and life struggle:
The Prince of life dead,
now reigns alive.

Music For Holy Week

what are your favorites?

We often discuss Advent & Christmas music here, but some of the most hauntingly gorgeous melodies ever written honor Christ’s Passion.

Above is Ah, Holy Jesus, which is my current favorite.

Here are the lyrics.

The second verse I find absolutely devastating (and cathartic). The line, “I crucified thee,”  which resolves the melodic tension of the previous measures, sends chills up my spine and... READ MORE

Radiance

A song for Saturday...

In honor of all of our moms out there—those gathering today and those who are home caring for families—here’s a song for you today from my all time favorite Catholic Mom musician, the amazing Sarah Bauer. This song from Maddalena’s mommy never ceases to make me smile - we are each called to shine in our own ways. Through the work you do in and around your home every day, you are an instrument of God’s love for your family. Take a moment to enjoy this song, to pray for all of the Moms gathering today in Stoneham and for those there in spirit as well.

Precious Memories

A song for Saturday

On Wednesday, at my grandfather’s wake, time stood still when my grandpa’s long-time mail carrier entered the room where his body rested, paid her respects, and quietly asked to sing a song for the family. Of course, we were overjoyed and grandpa’s children linked arms and stood near the foot of the bed, listening to this lovely lady in a postal service skirt and top, singing “Precious Memories” a cappella in old-timey fashion. I’d never heard this song before, but was so happy to find several wonderful versions of it on YouTube. Here’s Dolly’s - enjoy!

Chant to Inspire

A song for Saturday

A few years ago, my parents and I had the opportunity to visit Ave Maria Grotto in Cullman, Alabama.  It was such a moving experience that I created a video which is now featured on the Grotto’s website.  While in Cullman, we enjoyed mass at St. Bernard Abbey and were treated to chant by the Monks of the Abbey.  Today, while searching YouTube, I came across this video which features chant by the Monks of St. Bernard.  Their music is the perfect thing to savor during Lent.  Once you’ve enjoyed this, please take some time to visit their website, which includes a virtual chapel, their fantastic candle shop, and more information about the Benedictine monks who live and pray together at the Abbey.

Catholic Pick-Up Line Song

A song for Saturday...

This one has been making the rounds on the Catholic blogosphere, but it’s too cute not to share!  “Sing Along” is the ultimate Catholic “pick up” song from David Casper, who seems like a super guy and a great catch for any Catholic girl who’s in the market… although with “Sing Along” he may have girls lined up. So visit David’s website, check out his music, and share “Sing Along” with your friends, especially those in need of good pick-up lines!  Enjoy.
