Holy AND Healthy

Cardinal-designate Dolan strives to be healthy

For all of those who read and chimed in on my recent post about my efforts to get healthier in 2012, it looks like we’re in good company! I enjoyed reading this article in the New York Daily News about the efforts Cardinal-designate Archbishop Timothy Dolan is making to lose weight and become more fit. The Archbishop has a few advantages most of us don’t—a medically supervised regimen and a private... READ MORE

Catholic School Closings

Has your family been impacted?

I’ve been watching and praying for the situation in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, where a Blue Ribbon Commission on Catholic Education recently issued a report which will result in the closing and consolidation of many of the Archdiocese’s Catholic schools.

This morning, I spent some time reading Archbishop Chaput’s message following up on the commission’s recommendations and the response the... READ MORE

New Evangelizers

Know Your faith. Live Your Faith. Share Your Faith.

One of the happiest circumstances of my life was the day I decided to take a road trip to Southern California to attend the “Podcast Expo”. I made the decision on a whim after hearing two of my favorite podcast hosts, Greg and Jennifer Willits (then of The Rosary Army, now of The Catholics Next Door), speaking about the event on their podcast. I swallowed the fear I felt inside and took the road trip... READ MORE

Non-Chick Flicks

A few of my recent favorites

As long as the girls are talking entertainment today, I thought I’d share my “take” on a few of the films I had the chance to watch on my Christmas vacation this year. But you’ll note a trend here—none of these are “chick flicks”. Maybe that’s because I hung out with three “guys” all during the holiday season and I never get to choose the movie in that situation! Please note that all of these are... READ MORE

Moms Watching Weight?

...here we go again....

With the flip of the calendar and having spent nearly two deep-fried weeks visiting family in the South, I made the decision to finally take some action about my resolve to get healthier by dropping weight. Ten days of jambalaya, Christmas cookies, and no workouts will put you in that frame of mind.

After doing some praying, pondering and research, I decided to try the Weight Watchers online plan.... READ MORE

Most Fascinating Catholics of 2011

Who's on YOUR list?

For the past three years, I’ve pulled together a “most fascinating Catholics” list at the end of the year to attempt to shine the light on the amazing efforts of men and women, ordained, religious and lay, who are inspiring the world around them with incredibly effort and heart. You can take a peek back at my 2010 list here.

The amazing thing about this list has been how increasingly difficult it’s... READ MORE

When Other People's Kids Are Sad

What do you do?

This afternoon, my teenager Adam and I found ourselves in a busy discount store surrounded by holiday shoppers. The atmosphere was tense, made worse by large crowds and loud Christmas music. My greatest desire was to “get out of here ASAP”, but I ended up waiting for my Adam for a few moments in a crazy section of the store.

As I stood doing mental exercises to keep myself calm, I spotted not one... READ MORE

Peace Out

Finding peace this fourth week of Advent

Yesterday, I was in my typical Sunday morning frenzy. Rushing to get ready for Mass, a list a mile long rattled around in my head. So much to do, and so little time…

Off we went to 9:30 Mass, Greg and I. Every other Sunday, we attend Mass both at 9:30 and at 6:00, since Greg plays music in the morning, and Greg and Adam play at the nighttime Mass. For the past several weeks, one of my Sunday morning... READ MORE
