Fill 'Em Up!

Do you do Christmas stockings at your house?
During my childhood we did. My mom filled them with the fun stuff for us - little toys when we were younger, hair bands and stationery when we were older - and since we didn’t get to open our big presents until after Christmas morning Mass, the stockings helped tide us over. We enjoyed them.
But now that I’m a mother myself and dealing with the fight against... READ MORE
The Gift Dilemma

Our kids have too many toys.
If I were writing this on Twitter, I’d wryly label it #firstworldproblems, but the good fortune of our situation does not change the spreading-all-over-the-house, making-Mama-crazy aspect of it. There are too many toys.
Recent ruthless culling has returned our playroom to a manageable state, with a few age-inappropriate things stored and many many items sent to the donation... READ MORE
You're Great, They're Awful

I step up to the cutting counter at the fabric store. My sister’s with me, but she’s grabbing some stuff while I corral our four big kids, aged two, three, five, and five.
The staffer unfolds the first of my bolts and the children are all over the place. I think Camilla’s about to grab the scissors and try to cut the fabric herself. “Everyone please put one hand on the cart,” I tell them, and they... READ MORE
Pregnancy Fatigue
Posted by Arwen Mosher in Just me on Thursday, April 14, 2011
My husband and I were getting in the car. I made an “oof” sound as I climbed into my seat, and he glanced at me sympathetically. “I bet you’re ready to be done being pregnant now, huh?”
What? “Of course not! I’m only 30 weeks! It’s way too early for these babies to be born.”
After a pause, I realized he didn’t mean he wants me to give birth now, just that he imagines I’m starting to think fondly of... READ MORE
Slow Mama, Fast Toddler
Posted by Arwen Mosher in Family on Wednesday, April 13, 2011
This pregnancy and my activity restrictions have brought a new challenge: disciplining my toddler.
For me, discipline with a two-year-old mainly consists of teaching him that I mean what I say, especially when it comes to hurting others. In theory, it is tedious but fairly simple: if I say “Blaise, don’t do that” and he doesn’t obey, then I grab him and hold him and tell him again, firmly, and he... READ MORE
Predictable Moments

I was out running errands today and stopped to grab lunch on the road. It was just me and baby Isabel, and as I was feeding her a businessman about my age was led to the seat next to us.
He commented on the pretty baby and told me his wife was expecting in a few months.
“This will be our fifth,” he said.
“Congratulations,” I said, and then mentioned Isabel was our sixth.
We chatted back and forth... READ MORE
Diaper Bag Quest
Posted by Arwen Mosher in Just me on Thursday, March 24, 2011
In a couple months we’ll have newborns in our house again, and this time I am determined: I will find the perfect diaper bag.
Over the years I’ve found plenty of great baby products, but my diaper bag quest has been fruitless. IS there a perfect diaper bag out there?
We own two diaper bags, both of which I bought before Camilla was born. (Despite doing virtual and real-life searches for a great bag,... READ MORE
Blinking Through the Time Change

I had to laugh today when I came across Jennifer Fulwiler’s rant against Daylight Saving Time. This just when I was feeling happy and grateful about the time change - it was still light out when my husband got home from work! I love evening daylight.
We’re not a particularly schedule-driven family. Our kids’ bedtime varies by an hour or more many nights anyway, for various reasons. I do dislike “losing”... READ MORE
Prom for Moms

Did you go to prom in high school?
Would you like to go again? Or for the first time?
This one is a little different: it’s for women only, and it’s not just a party, it’s a fundraiser for charity.
Dubbed the “Mom Prom,” this event started a few years ago in an area near where we live, and the idea is apparently spreading across the country. Moms have fun pulling old prom or bridesmaid dresses out... READ MORE
Facebook: A Marriage Killer?
Posted by Arwen Mosher in Marriage on Monday, February 28, 2011
It feels like I’ve been reading and hearing it everywhere lately: Facebook is bad for marriages.
The statistic I often see is that Facebook is cited as a cause of divorce in 20% of cases.*
I told this to my husband and he raised an eyebrow at me. “Like… how? Someone got addicted to Farmville and neglected their spouse?”
If only it were that simple! Facebook, as it presents chances to reconnect with... READ MORE
