Which Came First?

We had a chicken costume in 3-6 months size, and we have two babies, so what could we do but make an egg?
Actually, I wasn’t planning on dressing the babies up at all, since basic non-frivolous tasks take all my energy these days. Kids demand costumes, but babies don’t care, so why bother?
But we only have two babies once. One chance to make a hilarious double costume so we can enjoy the photos for... READ MORE
Easy Costume Ideas
Posted by Danielle Bean in Family on Thursday, October 27, 2011
[Because it might be helpful for panicking moms across the country, I’m re-running this post from a few years ago.]
It’s that time of year again. As the poll we have going in the sidebar indicates, in late October many Catholic moms find themselves preparing to celebrate Halloween, All Saints Day, or some combination of the two.
And that means COSTUMES.
Have you been sewing for weeks and now your... READ MORE
Invasion of the Halloween Rats
Posted by AGroup in Just me on Friday, October 29, 2010
I’ve been so preoccupied with hiding from rats (yes, rats) as of late that I almost forgot to stop in and say hello!
Hello!
I must confess, fashion is just about the last thing on my mind right now—unless you know where a gal might find a fashionable blowtorch, of course. I would be very, very interested in obtaining information of that sort.
Naturally, my mind has wandered to Halloween on one or... READ MORE
"Saints" At Mass
Posted by Rebecca Teti in Faith on Monday, October 25, 2010
Will people come in costume to Mass at your parish on Sunday?
Fr. Z. wants to know, and is sponsoring a poll.
He’s asking a very narrow question about costumes at Mass.
I’m curious how your parish observes All Saints & All Souls days generally.
Anything beyond the special masses for those days? Are your observances private, or sponsored and encouraged by the parish?

Carnival Round The World
Posted by Rebecca Teti in Reviews on Saturday, March 06, 2010
Searching for an illustration for Fat Tuesday a week or two ago, I stumbled upon a fabulous collection of Carnival celebrations from around the world.
Going far beyond the floats and face paint of the celebration in Rio, the pictures introduced me to unknown and fascinating celebrations such as an orange festival in Spain and a mud festival somewhere in Latin America.
Then I promptly forgot all about it until just now, when I stumbled again—this time onto The Big Picture‘s amazing photos from Carnival celebrations around the world.
Depicted here are Dzolomari, Macedonians who keep alive an ancient practice of driving away evil spirits at the start of the new year.
If you have a minute, scroll around. The costumes are amazing—and only one or two of them are Brazilian dancing girls.
Don’t you find the variety of customs originating or melding with the liturgical year fascinating?

What?
You skipped that chapter from The Life of St. George?
My little nephew will be glad to fill you in.
All Dressed Up

Tonight my husband and I are attending an adult costume party in honor of a friend’s birthday. I have been excited about this for weeks.
Growing up, I celebrated Halloween exactly one time. I went as Wonder Woman and the evening involved a traumatic event that included me feeling like I was suffocating in the plastic mask (these were the late 70s after all). After that, our family began celebrating... READ MORE
Playing the Part

Here is Gabby modeling the St. Rose of Lima costume she wore to a party over the weekend.
It was her idea to pose so sanctimoniously.
“Um, why don’t you just look at me and smile?” I suggested.
“Because I am a saint!” she rolled her eyes before resuming her holy posture.
Did you know that St. Rose cut off all her hair in order to avoid vanity? Did you know that she wore a crown of roses in order to conceal a crown of spikes she wore as a penance?
Yeah, Gabby didn’t want to hear about that stuff either.
Calling All Saints

Halloween as we commonly celebrate it is the offspring of two unlikely parents born centuries apart — the ancient druids and the modern market. The druids marked the day of the dead with bonfires, ghoulish tricks, and scary costumes. Centuries later, retailers cashed in. Yet, somewhere in between the vast ages, Halloween got baptized and thus received its Christian name, All Hallows’... READ MORE
