Kateri Tekakwitha

With an oldest daughter named for Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha, a question I hear from readers quite often is, “How do you pronounce it?”

Well, if you do a little research, you’ll find that the officially correct pronunciation is “Gah-deh-lee Deh-gah-quee-tah.”

But we don’t say that. We pronounce our daughter’s name “KAY-tuh-ree.” But she also answers to other common pronunciations such as “kuh-TEER-ee,” “kuh-TARE-ee,” and “KAT-uh-ree.”

However you say it, if you aren’t familiar with the inspiring story of this great woman of God (and one of the patron saints of World Youth Day!), her feast day is the perfect time to learn more. You can check out the resources and ideas at CatholicCulture.org and pray the official prayer for her canonization (she was beatified in 1980).

O God, who, among the many marvels of Your Grace in the New World, did cause to blossom on the banks of the Mohawk and of the St. Lawrence, the pure and tender Lily, Kateri Tekakwitha, grant we beseech You, the favor we beg through her intercession, that this Young Lover of Jesus and of His Cross may soon be counted among the Saints of Holy Mother Church, and that our hearts may be enkindled with a stronger desire to imitate her innocence and faith. Through the same Christ Our Lord. Amen. Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha, pray for us.

What a wonderful resource, Danielle.  I have always wondered about the pronunciation myself, and with four daughters (and a fifth on the way) I definitely am always on the prowl for inspiring stories of young female saints.  Thanks for the scoop!

God Bless!

Happy feast day to Kateri!

I have always loved the name Kateri. Happy feast day to you!

I was rather curious about how your family pronounced it. We pronounce my six-year old niece’s name “kuh-TEER-ee,” but however you say it, it’s a beautiful name. Blessed Kateri, pray for us.

Our oldest daughter’s middle name is Kateri, and we choose to pronounce it kuh-TEER-ee.  While it was my husband’s choice, it has certainly grown on me, and I think it is a beautiful version of Katherine.  May she be canonized soon!

Oops, an error in my email and website.  All fixed!

Our daughter’s name is Kateri, pronounced KAT-e-ree, middle name Ailish, pronounced A-lish. She usually goes by Kat because so few people can make heads or tails of either Kateri or Ailish. My husband had long loved Blessed Kateri, being from upstate New York, so when our little girl came along, she got both our favs for girl names.

You guys are no help. You didnt tell us her last name. Thanks.

her last name is Tekakwitha…. (teh-kah-with-ah)

what about the second word of her name i need it for religion class

Saint Kateri,is very special and has a special plac in my heart.

Thank you very much! Since I have a devotion to her myself, it is crucial to know how to pronounce her name, Thank you very much!

Mom of Seven Beautiful kids,

Isabelle

This is a beautiful page. My name is Kateri, but me and other people pronounce my name: kuh-TEE-ree. I love the fact that my name is different, and i’ve always known where it came from, so it makes me happy. i respond to almost anything though, people read the name and don’t know how to pernounce it…. (it’s like: teary cat, but instead it’s cat teary… with 1 t….. cuh-teary) yeah. beautiful page
